Title: Crows are destroying my roof
Post by: Balog on August 06, 2010, 11:10:10 PM
Went to investigate a thumping noise, found several (5-6) crows pecking away at my roof. One of the little jackwagons ripped up a shingle and carried it off. Scared them away, they flew off to the trees directly behind our backyard where they joined several dozen of their friends.

I need to get rid of these little buggers. I'm thinking poisoned corn on the roof, and leave the corpses on the top of the ridge as a warning? Prefer to avoid ballistic solution as it's in town.

That's going to limit the answers you get here. :P

How about some live traps. Take them to the country and open the trap and yell PULL.

Might want to check in with Fish & Game first. They are a Federal nuisance Bird.

Somebody (Beeman, maybe? Gamo?) makes a nice pellet rifle with a silencer.

Ah, yes ... Gamo http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/cb.aspx?a=565337

Find yourself one of those plastic owls that they make to put in gardens. It shold keep them away as owls and crows hate each other.

Where's the fun in that?

I just saw some today when I was picking up some feed and filters. I think they were about $11.00. If you don't find any up your way just let me know. I'll ship one or two to you.

It doesn't work. The crows just hang out on the opposite side of the roof and make crude remarks about the owls.

Ah, you need  some air support. Ours is a bigass hawk that hangs around (as in big enough that our dog notices him flying over and she barks at it). Crows don't hang around in my area for that reason.

I used to use an owl decoy to bring the crows in to shoot them. It really didn't chase them away, just brought them into shotgun range.

Another ballistic/stealth solution.

Pushpins out of a blowgun.  You wouldn't believe it, but pushpins fly point first.  Terrible trajectory, though.  Ballistically inefficient.  Good for practice in breath and release control.

I'm tempted to try trimming down golf tees to .41 caliber at the head to see how they fly.  (Blowgun is .41)

Beauty of pushpins and golf tees is if you miss, it looks like someone accidentally dropped one wherever it lands.  Unlike a real blowgun dart. Which looks like a blowgun dart and generates the idea that someone was up to no good.  And you wouldn't want a kid to find one and get hurt with it.

And they even make biodegradable golf tees.  (http://thehighroad.us/images/smilies/evil.gif)

I'm not signing this one so nobody will know who posted it.

ETA:  Hmmmm.... these look interesting.... but I suspect their aerodynamics would be bad.... Might be a "point of departure" for further development, though.... hmmmm...

At least you don't have goats on the roof.

Those things are clever buggers. Like the Magpies also around my area, they like to gang up on other animals.

Akasha (tiny but vicious little black Cat that my parents have) managed to kill one Magpie, and now the rest of them shriek and shout at her whenever they see her. They do give her a wide Berth though.

Corvids definitely learn and have good memories.

Reduced powder .22LR loads.  Super Colibri, CB's, Aguila .22 SSS, etc.

How about hooking an air compressor to the blow gun, that ought to improve things a bit, plus you don't get that annoying lightheaded feeling after a long hunt.

Killing them might scare them away, or it might not. We discovered we could kill hundreds of crows in our garden and they just came back. The only thing that keeps them away is stringing up one of their dead where they can see it. It's a bit macabre, and the neighbors might not approve, but it absolutely works.

Amazing how fast a single, catchy commercial can spawn a new euphamism.

And then they crap all over them. For real.

if they're sticking to the peak you might try the spiky aluminum stuff that they use for pigeons. Run it along the peak. I'm assuming they don't like the slope.

Roof isn't all that steeply pitched, they're strutting around all over it. I'm not overly comfortable shooting even Colibris at an upward angle in a city. If they were on the ground sure, but I'd have to fire from inside the house up in to the trees behind the backyard. It would probably be ok, but I'm gonna avoid it if at all possible.

Maybe you should call animal control. They won't do anything but they may have good advice.

Could you spray some kind of chemical like OC or ammonia (diluted, of course) on the roof?  Might keep them away until the next rain....

Hire Nick1911 to electrify your roof.  Think of the entertainment that would provide.

Why are they ripping up your roof? Are there bugs under the shingles?  If it were me. I would go buy a dozen mousetraps and put them up there.

Wonder how long you'd have to keep in on-crow to get a kill?

Reminds me of an episode of "NYPD Blue" where two of the cops have to get a steer out of someone's apartment.
