Title: The Green Bar of Nothing an other issues
Post by: HeroHog on August 12, 2017, 01:21:08 PM: The Green Bar of Nothing is still here and today, If I post, the page doesn't display on Post. The post addition is made but the page that SHOULD be a reload of the page I posted to results in a blank page. Same thing happens when I hit the "Mark All Forums Read" button. :P

It was a link to some site, and that was triggering some virus warnings a few weeks ago. When that happened, I changed it to an APS attachment.

And I just checked my profile -- my avatar image is GONE! I tried to reattach it, and nothing happened.

Now I'm wondering how many others are out there who can't get in and can't say anything about it to get the problem corrected.

Everything worked normally except I could not give any input to the board, such as posting, PMing, replying, or anything.

I'd get a message that my session had timed out, log out and log back in to correct the problem, but I couldn't even log out.

Going back into my forum settings and see if I've still got "return to topic." selected to see if that's the problem.

I think hitting the back button twice showed me my post. Or some combination of that and reload or something. This was after a "Modify" operation, though. I'll have to play with it. IE 11. Maybe it was the eye of newt or the wing of bat I keep handy.

That's strange. I see everything fine on my desktop browser and on my phone browser (not tapatalk). These are weird Gremlins.

It's hidden. Try viewing the source.

The idea is to create a bunch of links to domains for sale or porn/escort sites to make search engines value the domain more. In order to get people to ignore it on their website they hide it using a CSS trick that renders it invisible.

The problem is, that junk is appended to the responses to asynchronous Javascript calls (when the browser asks for just a little bit of properly formatted data using Javascript instead of reloading the entire page). In that case the additional code can screw up the request. That is causing a number of the issues.

I know nothing about forum software, but I'm curious how hard it might be to switch to different software? Is there any that lets you just click a button to migrate a site from one software to another (to not create work for the person already doing it for free)?

I also recall Rev saying that server space to handle a forum is pretty cheap. If getting off Geovario would help, I'll volunteer to pay for a three year domain subscription and three years of server space if physically migrating would help us.

I'm a developer not an ops guy, but given file/DB read access I'd be willing to put some time into doing a test-run on an AWS EC2 server of upgrading the SMF version, and/or migrating to alternate forum software. If successful at one or both, we could decide where to go from there with the actual site.

He may have reasons for staying with Geovario given his other sites are there.

I also had to just log back in and the forum is in the default font and color scheme for me, but there is also a notice about "repair settings" at the top of the page, so it could be one of the guys is poking around and resetting stuff.
