So yesterday I saw that earnings for Dick's came out. While they beat estimates, same store sales were down (again) and their stock took another hit. Today they did this:

Evil "hunting rifles" and ammo are also now out to make room for stuff that "sells better". I actually get this because of the fact that the number of hunters nationally has been going down and down, so yeah, these rifles would not sell as well as, oh, I don't know... an M&P15?

Actually clever. Get more of the spandex crowd. Sell all the guns anyway at Field and Stream. Shop neither, not ever.

So the issue of sporting goods stores becoming primarily clothing boutiques and team sports gear is widespread.  I remember when I was younger, and the flagship store of Eddie Bauer in downtown Seattle sold fine fishing gear, bespoke English shotguns and serious down expedition gear.  It was where you went to outfit for your Himalayas expedition. Same with REI.  Now both of them seem to be primarily upscale clothing with some gear thrown in.  The retail channel has to adjust to meet the wants of the customers.
