Title: Killing the Golden Goose in the Golden State
Post by: Scout26 on June 09, 2019, 05:14:10 AM
And sadly, the author, nor her (pot smoking) compatriots, of this story will not learn that it applies to other types of farms and businesses.

They'll never admit taxes and regulations have anything to do with it. Rather they'll blame the greedy growers for wanting a profit which will require more taxes and regulations to fix.
Surprised this article came from Politico.

I'm not. Typical of their mindset. If you replaced pot with guns, the article would be praising gov regulation and long, drawn out permitting processes.

Speaking of which, it's almost schadenfreude, watching these pot growers, most of whom are undoubtedly far left enviros, now reaping what they sow with things like two year waiting periods for environmental impact statements to make sure there's not a single three towed purple stink bug within 10 miles of their operation.

Hah.  The best way to reduce crime is to make crime legal and then have government regulate it and tax it.

Apparently Oregon has such a glut of legal weed it would take something like 6 years at current sales rates to us up the current inventory.

You championed the "Cheap, legal weed for all!" mantra and got it legalized. Okay, now it's legal. And cheap. And suddendly your operation, which you built around an economy driven by restricted supply, is failing. You didn't listen to your own words. It never occured to you that "legalized" is synonymous with "taxed and regulated". It's also synonymous with "industrialized", which invariably results in reduced consumer prices as economies of scale take hold and demand begins to outstrip supply.

In short, you got what you wanted. Quit whining and deal with it like the rest of us have to.

That didn't take long to turn the weed industry into the same thing of the pork and chicken industry.

I think it is supply outstripping demand that lowers prices.

I view the situation as similar to the dotcom boom and bust.  You have old illegal growers of marijuana going legit, legal growers of other things switching(and if you can grow orchids, you can grow weed), and even people trying it as their first business.  Lots of capital flowing in seeking the crazy returns the first adopters saw.  Meanwhile, everybody is expanding as fast as they can.  An illegal grower who had 20 plants hidden in a garage might now have 2,000 now that he's legit.  More paperwork, but no need to hide from the state, engage in money laundering, and they can justify orders of magnitude more equipment for automation.

To a point and then you get black market to bypass the taxes and regulations.  You end up with devious criminals selling individual cigarettes on the street.

^^^^^^and there is something wrong with that?  Although in NYC you run the risk of having the crap beat out of you by police and maybe even die as a result.

On a side note...
Our glassblower told us awhile back that a local manufacturer of molecular stills (wiper stills to be exact) have a 2 year backlog of orders.  The Pot/CBD entrepreneurs are showing up at their door weekly with suitcases full of cash (they can't get loans) trying to buy this equipment.
Its only going to be a short matter of time before a chemical/pharma manufacturer is going to destroy the small businesses, by processing CBD oil on some previously idle piece of equipment.

I just saw on the news this morning that Colorado is reaping $200mil/yr from its legal pot sales. It seems to be using the money for the same things most states use their lottery money to fund.

CA seems to be the only state so far that has completely screwed up legal pot.

Not anything wrong.  I was trying to be snarky and reference that incident.

IMO, it is the obvious result of burdensome taxes and regulations that the authoritarian BigGov types forget about.  They always think they can expand taxes and regulations to infinity without any reaction from the market.

Waste, fraud, corruption....oh wait, That's Illinois.

I wish they would just make it legal in all 50 states. Why? There are only about dozen bridges that cross the Mississippi river between Iowa and Illinois, be prepared for checkpoints on every bridge once it becomes legal in Illinois. Recently our governor vetoed a bill to expand medical marijuana a little bit, she is a recovering alcoholic and her explanation for the veto is that she is worried people will get addicted to marijuana. I imagine she has already given the Iowa State Patrol and the DOT cops an executive order to purchase more drug dogs and hire more officers for these checkpoints.

The bill she vetoed basically expanded the use of medical marijuana (from only CBD to actual THC containing products) for a few illnesses, mostly terminal ones and to open up the ability for a place like University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinic to conduct research to see if it is a viable drug for medical use.
