Merkel admits that their "don't bother to assimilate" multiculturalism has failed. After the horse left the barn of course.
I see many similarities to where we are in this. Especially politicians/elites vs run of the mill citizens. Rampant immigration and the EU are the two biggest complaints of all my relatives there. Whenever any of the come to visit, griping about that stuff is half the conversation, even with my liberal relatives.
Also of interest was that they seem to have a book that is somewhat of an analog to "The Bell Curve" that is making the elites unhappy by stating that German intelligence as a whole has dropped with immigration gone wild.

^^^Wow, this is kind of a big deal for a German Chancellor to say this, especially one raised in East Germany under 'we are all socialist brothers, etc.'.

We need to shut down illegal immigration and bring legal immigration down to a trickle.
If it is even possible to assimilate all of our legal immigrants it will take a generation or two.

Even that would only be possible if they wanted to be assimilated. In past generations, most immigrants wanted to become Americans. Many of today's immigrants have no desire whatsoever to become Americans. They're just here for the free *expletive deleted*it -- they don't think of themselves as Americans at all.

It's not even "no desire", which more implies, "I'm not going to the trouble." It's actively making it known that they won't join the melting pot and that America and Americans are bad.

When you have a very large contingent of the native-born who think America and Americans are bad, it's not surprising that they infect many immigrants with that pernicious opinion.
Can we just give them their "America" and take the parts that remain closest to the founding principles? I've got suggestions for the map, even. (But they'll have to deal with 2 or 3 non-contiguous zones.)
