Electrical experts chime in
« on: July 28, 2005, 02:12:54 AM »
That does it.....we lost power AGAIN last night after just a few gusts of wind.  The grid here in this area is so stressed that if one little thing goes bad, the whole thing goes down.

I'm going to call the electrician in to have the panel upgraded to 200amps and add a transfer panel for the generator.

Before I have the different folks give us estimates:

I know that there are differences in the panels, breakers, switches, etc.  What is the best brand to work with?  More importantly....any brands to avoid?

Norton: pretty much any rated panel will be adequate--GE, Square D, etc. There are differences in quality in the equipment sold in the big-box stores and stuff from an electrical supply store. Be sure your bidders specify what brand/model SEP they propose to install.

Some people I know are also on an unstable grid.

They have a Banner power backup system and have been VERY happy with it.

A few years ago they lost power for nearly a week due to a bad ice storm. They hosted several people in their community for slumber parties.
