I'm filthy rich!
« on: July 29, 2005, 05:24:14 AM »
Dear ; Friend,

First, I must apologize if my mode of first contact is not acceptable
to
you and also solicit your confidence in this transaction; this is by
virtue
of its nature as  being utterly private and top secret. Though I know
that a
transaction of this magnitude will make anyone apprehensive and worried
My
Name is Sylvia Letana,I am the only dauther of late Mr. and Mrs Fred
Nzinga
Letana who was assisinated in 2002 during a political unrest that
engulfed
my Country Zambia  recently. They where shot to dead my unknown
Person(s)
who where accusing him of funding and sponsoring a factional Political
group
with his money. So in respect of this they came to our House and shot
everyone dead including  my two younger Siblings by then I was not at
home,But fortunately my Father did not die instantly that day. It took
him
three Months later after that incident before he finally gave up the
ghost.

Before the death of my father, in October 28, 2002, in a private
hospital,
he secretly called me on is bedside and told me that it has the sum of
five
million, five hundred and thousand United States(USS5,500,000)dollars
he
deposited it in a Finance and Security company here Dakar Senegal. with
my
name as next of kin to the fund. Now, after the recent crisis that
burst up
in my Country I ran to Senegal where my father deposited the fund and
seeked
asylum, that is how I now  went to stay in the United States Refugee
Camp.
So that is where am  currently staying for now. But the problem am
encoutering now is that when I went to the Financial holding company to
withdraw the  money. I was made to understand that with my status as a
refugee I can not be able to clear the fund, but can do so with the help
of a
forieng partner. They  told me that the local law hear does not Permit
a
refugee to operate any business atall, nor transact a fund of such
magnitude. So please dear, I am pleading, if ou can help me and stand
as my
nominated next-of-kin and withdraw the fund for me (USS5,500,000) to
your
account  in your Coutry and I will be very glad to

Please once can help me with this project, I will offer 15% percent of
themoney then after I will come over to your Country to start up a new
life.
And also go into any profitable business you will advise me to do.
Please
you can reply me with this alternate email address as it is the  most
confidential for me at the moment. syl_letana9@yahoo.com

I will be waiting to hear your favourable response.

Sincerely,
Sylvia Letana

I get these all the time. There's a website where someone baited one of these scammers for a while and got them to do all kinds of stupid stuff like take pictures of themselves holding fish lol.

Nope, it's 419eater.com

I've had some in-depth conversations with the owner of the site. I was sharing some of my spoofs with him in which I try to convince the people that they need to destroy their computers.

So far no joy, but I keep trying.

Ah, the famous Nigerian 419 scam, also known as Advance Fee Fraud.

That letter you received is the only part of a several-hundred million dollar per year business that most people will see.

Yeah.  Hundreds of millions of dollars per year -- and that's from people who will actually admit to falling for the scam.

Some estimates place 419 scamming as Nigerias fifth largest business.

As you can imagine, given an organized crime in which 99% of the contact takes place over the anonymity of the Internet and the criminals themselves rarely leave their countries and the law enforcement in those countries actively engages in protecting the criminals -- recovering stolen money, or even prosecuting the criminals, is bloody near impossible.

Restoring my faith in libertarian philosophy, where governments can't get anything done, citizens have stepped up to the plate.

The tactic is called 'scambaiting'.  People who know that the e-mail is a scam will reply to it, pretending to be gullible.  Then they waste the time and money of the scammer by any means.

This is effective in a number of ways:
1)  It takes time to scam someone.  Every minute a scammer wastes trying to scam someone who knows better is a minute he can't use to scam Granma Frickert out of her savings;
2)  It makes the scammers paranoid, so that when a legitimate mark acts a little odd, the scammer will decide that he's actually a baiter and drop him, and;
3)  The humorous things done to the scammers by baiters are actually very good informational exercises:  I can spend an hour telling people the facts about 419 scams and they'll forget all about it fifteen minutes after they leave the auditorium, or I can tell about the time I got a Nigerian 419 scammer to send me a picture of himself with an octopus on his head, and people will remember 419 scams for a damn sight longer then 15 minutes.

The best site I've found for information on scam-baiting is here:
www.419eater.com

I'm registered on their forums as Templar.  Drop by and take a look.

LawDog-

I have lurked at that site. Some really sharp folks!

There is some funny stuff, then there is some really scary goings on.  Seems some folks have taken matters into their own hands and never been heard of since.

Best advice given on that site - if you do not know what you are doing - don't do it. Read , listen and learn.

419eater is good, but Thescambaiter.com is much better, and has much more activity.

That's funny stuff.  I emailed 419 hoping to get a "two in the pink, one in the stink" photo of a scammer.
