What happens when you drain a tank and forget to break the vacuum when you do?  shocked

damn  didn't think it would go that fast
compromised is understatement
It is much more powerful to seek Truth for one's self.  Seeing and hearing that others seem to have found it can be a motivation.  With me, I was drawn because of much error and bad judgment on my part. Confronting one's own errors and bad judgment is a very life altering situation.  Confronting the errors and bad judgment of others is usually hypocrisy.

Saw that.  The thing looks like it's made of plastic, but it's probably one of those light metal alloys.
Anyone know?

Yep.  A hot-fluid carrier, drained, the hot fluids replaced with hot gases, sealed, and allowed to cool.

-can you say IMPLOSION?

KA-WOOMF!!  There's a sound you don't want to hear if it's your job to empty the tanker.  cheesy

I was :headscratch: for a few seconds.

Then I realized the near vacuum was there for the entire clip, and was presumably in that state for some time before the clip even began. Some small part of the tank got a dent or a crease, or a minor variance in the metal, a weld, a angled joint for a fitting, whatever... then the pucker spread exponentially fast as it broke the even circular integrity of the tank and the air pressure outside got leverage.

It's funny when you're at a RxR stop, and you're first or second in line of the cars and you can actually read the sides of the cars and tanks of what's going by sometimes. Anhydrous Ammonia... Liquid molten sulfur... Liquid Carbon Dioxide... Chlorine.... wheegrin

It's one of those "Failure is not an option." kind of undertakings very few think of, and it's often going right through your neighborhood at 50-60-70mph at 3am.  And with a few notable exceptions, they do a pretty good job of it.

I promise not to duck.

I would sincerely hope they never have ammonia and chlorine tankers in the same train!

yes, by the time we see the tank it's all ready to implode. I was expecting it to do a kind of slow motion crumple myself, a bit surprised at how fast it went.

A friend of mine had tracks right behind his house and those trains roared through there, I often wondered what would happen to him and his house if one got loose.

"a pretty good job"

<img src="http://posterboard.tv/misc/091502spill.png"></img>

Graphic I made back in '02 when I was blogging about a sulfuric acid tanker that derailed and popped open. IIRC the blue was the expanded evac zone and the blue arrow was the prevailing wind... maybe. That was a long time ago Smiley

Point being, even the severe accidents aren't all that bad unless you're actually caught *in* it. Worst thing happened was that there were about 3-4 acres of dead anything, a couple more acres of cars with damaged paint, and a couple thousand unhappy folks spent the night in gymnasiums.

Want to try a fun experiment?

Fill a sink partially with cool water.

Get an empty soda can, and put a little water in it. Put it on the burner on the stove and let it heat until the water starts boiling.

Pick the can up with tongs or a heavy glove and put it in the sink mouth down.

You've just made your own mini rail car!

This post is misleading.  My mini rail car didn't ride on rails nor did it make choo choo sounds.

I don't think the cooling gas is the answer to this one.
As you can see there are people lined up to watch the implosion, timing wound have been impractical with all those people around. Does anyone know what language they are speaking?
My theory is that this was a demo for a large vacuum pump of some sort. I have seen 55 gal steel drums crushed by guys advertising those truck mounted vacs.
After all the voices did sound german and we all know how the germans like to make the biggest and best of things. Maybe they are going to use it to suck oil from the ground without drilling. shocked
I needed a mod to change my signature because the concept of "family friendly" eludes me.

A real rail car doesn't make "choo choo" sounds either.

I suspect that that was not a vacuum pump. The collapse was far too rapid.

I've seen numerous demonstrations of what happens to a closed container when it is capped and left to cool, and several have been as rapid, and as dramatic, as this rail car.

I've seen tank manure haulers after they implode. The baffles rust and seperate from the sides and when the liquid manure gets sloshing around being pulled and spread/injected across the field the tank implodes from the vacuum being created.
