Anyone tried to stuff a 208gr amax in a .308 yet?
« on: February 16, 2013, 11:44:24 AM »

left to right- 168gr nosler hpbt, 178gr AMAX, 208gr AMAX, 140gr SMK (6.5mm just for comparison's sake).

With .308 bullets becoming as rare as hen's teeth, I thought I'd give them a try since the 208s are at least sporadically available. In combination with RL-17 (which few people use yet, and can be easy to find still), Its supposedly possible to safely push these 2500+FPS out of a .308. While the velocity doesn't sound impressive, the G1 BC=.633 and a G7=.324, which if you plug into a ballstics calculator beats the snot out of just about any other bullet out of the .308.

You got the twist to spin them correctly?

They need a 1:10, which is what my Savage 10FP has.

Oh, well, never mind, then.  My 700VS is one in 11.75.  Don't think it'll work.  I would like to compete at 1k with it, and 175 SMK or the 178 Scenars seem to be the hot ticket for this.  My 168 SMK's are for short to medium, but go transonic ~ 900yds.  Don't think I can boot the out the muzzle fast enough to stay supersonic to a k.

Bet those 208's would rawk when loaded in a really .30 über magnum.

I would think you're losing a lot of .308 Win case capacity with that long bullet, which will rob you of velocity to stay supersonic at 1K.

I suppose you could run a reamer into the rifling to lengthen the throat, which would let you seat the bullet out enough to be barely held in the case neck...

When I get my 308 Norma running, I will have to check the twist and see if I can run this bullet.

Yep.
I did a little measuring last night- my rifle has afairly short throat and I can only seat to 2.935", I've read where othres are seating to 3.000" to get every little bit of case capacity as possible. The only thing to do now is load up a ladder and shoot them over the chronograph.
