Looking at Monkeyleg's "Unforgiven" thread, I see two folks decided it would be high times to begin quoting memorable lines from that movie even though it had nothing to do with the conversation at hand.

I understand that this is an APS tradition known as "thread drift" and despite being counterproductive to constructive dialog, it is fun...

But what is it that makes people randomly begin quoting from pop culture references once one is simply mentioned?  I see this is real life quite often.  Mention a movie or book and someone delivers a line from it, even if your point of referencing the movie had nothing to do with discussing its content.

You're supposed to wait until the movie is mentioned before you quote from it  Huh?

I know what you're thinking. "Did he fire six shots or only five?" Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself. But being as this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?

I think that pop culture, being "popular" is often a common link found throughout society among largely different subsets of people.  It's like a shared event between different people that gives them something in common, but without having actually shared an event together.

Once someone posts or says some dialog from a recognizable film, it's only appropriate for the listener to respond with more dialog from the film, or from a related film to tell the speaker "Hey, I know what you're talking about -- I saw that film too and found it good/funny/etc.  And here's something that ties into it!"

I like to sprinkle source code and internal technical documentation with gratuitous pop culture references (at least 20 years old) and American idioms.  So when my company finally gets rid of all the US workers and everything is supported in China and India, they'll have something to "WTF?" about.

I think people go for pop-culture and movie quotes so quickly, because the older, more historical quotes are so difficult to be sure they're true, or being used correctly.
