Need Palm FREEWARE database
« on: March 30, 2005, 09:39:25 AM »
I'm looking for a FREEWARE palm database that will let me import csv files, edit and/or add data then export back to the csv file.
Does anyone know of a good source for something like this?

Thanks,
I'm in the process of looking there now but I haven't come across one yet.  Most of them require ThinkDB or Handybase

I've been putzing around with PDAs for 6-7 years now and can't recall anything that did what you want on the palm platform.  PocketPC might have something, but palm was always lacking in the data manipulation side of things.

Though, I was able to use my palmpilot and a custom serial cable to manage routers years ago.  After I moved on to more productive things, I found a dedicated app for Cisco routers. cool

I'm fairly new to PDA's and about all I use mine for is address book, to do list, and date book.  What I would like to do is
manage a database on my PC, go out and collect data in the field and come back and download that data back to my desktop.
I can use any prog on my desktop Excel, 123, Notes, although I would prefer to use Excel.  Import to and from using a csv file seems
pretty easy so that might also be my prefered method.

There are spreadsheet apps for the palm, but I'm not sure if any are freeware.  Most any spreadsheet app should be able to handle csv files.  Also, look under "Business Apps" sections of any freeware sites.  What you're describing sounds less like a database and more like a simple spreadsheet.  You already have your PDA, but PocketPC (Ipaq for example) is better suited to this IMO.  You actually have a PPC version of Excel on the PDA, so moving from one to the other is painless.  IMO, the PPC makes a better "pocket computer", while the Palm is a better "organizer".

I found this: http://www.quickoffice.com/
It's not free, but it looks like it'll do what you want

An article about Palm spreadsheet software: http://www.geek.com/pdageek/features/palmspreads/

Inexpensive and does csv: http://palmsource.palmgear.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=software.showsoftware&prodid=1873#

FYI
I created my desktop file using Excel and saving to a csv format.  I downloaded a Palm prog called DB: http://pilot-db.sourceforge.net/ and another prog called DB-Editor: http://www.jakewalk.de/palm/dbeditor_e.html .  I open the csv file with DB-Editor on my desktop and save it to a prb file.  I then hotsync the prb data to my Palm and open the Palm prog DB.  After entering/editing data in the field I reverse the process to read in Excel on the desktop.
Thanks for all the replies.

Very cool.  I never thought about using more than one program to do the job.
