t-38
« on: May 25, 2016, 03:56:22 PM »
I've seen these flying around and thought they looked good.  Finally got to take a pic up close, just thought I would put it here.

That sure does look like a MIG28 straight out of the danger zone to me. ;)

Nice pic, I have always liked the T38s, very sleek plane.

I used to love watching the NASA guys fly them at Edwards whenever I had work there.

Old design, but still very sleek even today.  A 1:48th scale die-cast is in my collection of bricabrac.....

A NASA guy told me the T-38s were used in the aggressor squadrons. Don't know if that was accurate or not.

EDIT: I just caught Bob's winky wink emoti, so I guess so. :)

In the movie they stated they used F-5's and A-4's for the aggressor planes.  Then they used A-4's for the Top Gun school scenes and F-5's (aka T-38's) for the MiG-28 fight scenes.

Both the F-5 and T-38 are used as aggressor aircraft.

T-38 and F-5 are very close to the same airplane.  The F-5 is basically little more than an armable T-38.

When I was stationed at NADC Warminster we would get the Air Force A-37s from Willow Grove over every now and then. It was really strange to see the T-37s all camo'd up and sporting all of those bomb racks and drop tanks.

Yes and no.
F5 is faster and has higher performance (climb rates, etc).

Otherwise, yes.

And maybe the Air Force uses T38's as aggressor aircraft, but the Navy and Marines use F5's.
