Limoncello...
« on: June 21, 2016, 10:27:45 AM »
Anyone ever try making this?

I've not had it in years, but came across a recipe for it. Sounds easy, but I don't want to waste the time and effort if it's not going to turn out.

The recipe uses Vodka, but says that grain alcohol is more authentic.

A good friend makes some every year. I'm not a huge limoncello fan, but it appears to be a good representative of the style. I can see what recipe he uses if you like.

From what I can tell, it's pretty much all the same basic recipe. Traditional Limoncello uses grain alcohol, but that can be kind of tough to find. Not sure if Virginia package stores sell it or not.

I make half a dozen batches or so each year.  I drink some, give most of it away.  I use Meyer lemons off my trees, and 100 proof Vodka.  It gives a much smoother product than grain alcohol.

Nice, especially the "my own tree" part.

My Great Aunt and Uncle lived in Yuma and every year for years would send my Grandparents huge boxes of grapefruits, lemons, and oranges from the trees on their property.

Then we'd have a juicing party...

They don't sell Everclear in Virginia?

No.  They don't sell high-test grain alcohol here.  Last time I had any, I bought it in TN.  Might have to see if it's available in WV, MD, or DC, all of which are nearby.

To be perfectly honest, I don't know, but Mtnbkr seems to. I've never had occasion to buy Everclear.

I work in DC, though, and there's a very good liquor store right next to my office where I buy most of my hooch because it's a LOT cheaper than buying it in Virginia - on some things more than a $10 difference in cost.

A quick web search seems to indicate that the best you can get is 151 proof in DC, VA, or MD.

It's sold in WV.  Next time I'm near the WV border, I'll try to pick up a bottle or three.

Thanks, but I think I'll just use Vodka. Easier.

My sister makes it using 190 proof Everclear. It's really good, and dangerous because it's way too easy to drink too much.

My great grandfather made it. He didn't buy or find the alcohol.

Course he also made grappa and a few other bits of Italian booze. It usually doubled as paint thinner and fuel without any difficulty.

Well, first issue encountered...

The liquor store I use doesn't carry 100 proof vodka. Only 80.

So, we'll see how it works with 80 proof...

any liquor store should be able to get you 100 Proof Vodka on the next truck.  If they won't go to bat for you, change stores.  Even in my small town, there are some 35 outlets.   :)

Well well well, guess what I found in my pantry a few days ago, which I had forgotten about?

My Limoncello!

I opened the jar and my god it smells wonderful!

I poured in the second bottle of vodka, and this weekend I'll make the simple syrup for it.

Someone here was making Walnut liquor around the same time...

Anyone know who that was?

That was me.  Turned out pretty good (meaning that no one went blind or died) I gave most of it away over the Holidays.  I still have Five 1/2 pint Mason jars of the stuff, I'll probably give away another 4 jars.

I also have ten lemons, that I bought a few weeks back in my fridge.  I've been meaning to make a batch of Limoncello.
Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.
