2016 retirement account performance
« on: December 31, 2016, 11:24:31 AM »
A disappointing year for my primary retirement account:

1/1/2016 value:              $ 584,399.08

12/31/2016 value:           $ 616,659.47

High value on 9/7/2016:  $ 641,053.55

Low value on 2/8/2016:   $ 549,187.23

Rate of return in 2016: 4.63%

This is from a 403(b) with a 55/45 split between stock index and bond index funds.  My long-term Treasury fund took a major dump after the election, ending up with 1.0% return in 2016.

My 401k didn't do too badly this year.  9.39 return. kinda kicking myself that I wasn't paying more attention back in january and didn't move stuff over to a money market account for a few months, would probably have increased that rate of return by another 50%, maybe a little more....

9.9% return this year. This of course ignores I had CDs when I was 19, started a TSPaccount in my 20s. CDs are gone, looted the TSP to fund divorce 2.0. So now I am 41 and have a 21k retirement account. Doh!

On the bright side my job does a small match so I got 2% of my gross for free and tax free. Assuming a functional government I should get SS and my reserve pension. Oh, and I retired once, it sucked, so I want to work in some form as long as possible.

My 401k did 6.93% YTD and 9% since inception.  I can live with that,

Fidelity says my personal rate of return for 2016 was +22.70%.  The vast majority of that was from my PCAR shares gaining 41% (weighted average based on purchase dates).  My other mutual funds in the 401k gained 4-ish%.

My IRA's are hard to calculate given all the changes we made with them this year.  Changed the investment mix totally.  But they're probably in the +4-ish% range.  ETA: They're up 4.3% since we made that change back in April.  However I'm not sure if they made or lost money between January and April, or how much.  That said, the change over that time should have been small, either direction.

According to Vanguard, my RoR for 2016 was 14.8%. A lot of that was my company stock, which really took off this year.

A few MLPs that tanked over the year dragged that down.

Did pretty well last year, 11.72% ROR

Trying to pay off some debts so contributions weren't as high as I would have liked, but I'll take the return I got on what's already in there.

I had a year when my RoR was close to -30%. That was at the height of the great recession.

I doubled the hell down and kept investing as much as I could.

401(k) did 11.93% in 2016.

Lot of ups and downs over time, but overall return has been the equivalent of 9.24% compounded annually over the last 22 years.

I'm similar to Millcreek in my ratios. I got 4.67% in the Vanguard (taxable and tax deferred combined), and 4.73% in the TSP.

My shocker this year was my "substitute for gambling" Ameritrade account where I play with individual stocks. I pulled 37.7%. Sadly, it's the account with the least amount of money in it.

I attribute it to luck, some skill, and hard experience (because it's certainly done less well in years past). In February, I threw a bunch of dough into increasing positions in good stocks I had that got sucked down in the wash that month, plus bought some BP and AT&T which have done very well since then. Also my BofA stock went up a lot, and I bought Deutsche Bank at $11.50 in October, when everyone said it was on death's door.

I'm still happy with the Vanguard and the TSP, as I plan my retirement using the 4% rule. Conservative, but it makes me feel more confident about having a comfortable income flow through retirement.

What's that? 4% of the people here give a damn whether you're retired or not, and the rest just don't really care?

I'm pretty sure 4% is overestimating in the "give a damn" column.

Need to check my own. I keep mine simple. S&P 500 for somewhere between 60-80% of my 401k. Rest is just to play money. 1 year change is +12.74%, so in other words, pretty ok returns.

Very very few funds beat the S&P on the long term. The ratios vary, but generally most studies say half to eighty percent of actively managed funds don't beat index funds. Tack in the fees and yeah. I might be able to beat the averages. But I'm lazy efficient, so I'll stick with my strategy. I figure once I hit late forties or early fifties, I'll move a percent or two per year out of stocks. Bonds or t-notes.

Above was all state of the art advice I got from the Intelligent Investor. Written in 1948, I believe. Haven't yet found a better guide.
