Burning a plane ticket, destination Reno, need itinerary
« on: January 01, 2017, 07:57:27 PM »
Friends, SWMBO and I are flying to Reno b/c I was about to lose a pair of tickets.  That's fixed in time and location, arriving 01/10/17 (Tuesday) mid afternoon, and leaving very early Sunday, 01/15.  I have booked a car, and our room on the airport campus on Saturday night.

Please recommend an itinerary for sedentary sofa spuds.  I'd like to at least visit Yosemite while I'm in that AO, and I guess I need to lay eyes on Lake Tahoe.  I'm not into winter sports.

Thanks for any suggestions. I know zip point squat about this area.

Rent a 4x4 and go drive around MWTC Bridgeport,  it's open to civilians.  It's the other side of Yosemite but with less tourists.  Gorgeous country.

You'll be out of luck for Yosemite. Long drive and HWY120 (Tioga Rd) will be closed until around MAY-JUN for snow. You can get in from the other side, but it's like 8 hours from Reno. You'll be able to get to Tahoe, but if there's weather, the chain restrictions go active, so you may need to rent chains.

If you do take the drive down 395, there's interesting places to see (all weather/road dependent). Check out Bridgeport, down to Lee Vining. Mono lake can be awesome in the Winter. A little farther South gets you to June Lake and Mammoth.

I always stop at the Reno Cabelas when I'm there. Reno also has a Black Bear Diner - a regional chain that is always good for breakfast. Can't help you with casinos if that's your thing. While  I usually overnight at the Boomtown (across the street from Cabelas), I avoid the casino portion.

Edit: Oh, also, outside of Bridgeport is Bodie State Historical Park. A preserved mining ghost town. I've only ever been in the Summer and Fall, but I think the road is open (again, weather dependent) in the Winter.

Ben beat me to mentioning the chains restriction. I don't know what the rules are today -- I was there in the late 90s and, at that time, you weren't required to have chains if you had a 4WD vehicle. But -- it's still a bit of a hike from Reno -- you'll have to plan on at least one night in the park, preferably two if you expect to see anything.

What Ben wrote about Tahoe.  Great scenery, but watch for snow.

Virginia City is an easy trip from Reno (less than an hour, and roads should be clear).  Basically a tourist trap, but you get to see where Mark Twain worked and have your picture taken in front of the Bucket Of Blood saloon.

Nevada State Museum and Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City, if that's to your liking.

A bunch of casinos in Reno, of course.

The National Automobile Museum (formerly Harrah's Auto Collection) in Reno is a must-see for car buffs:  http://www.automuseum.org/

I love Virginia city. Likely really dead and cold of the windy variety now though. The BBQ joint on the high end of town deserves a stop.

Not much in that area if you don't winter sports.  Tahoe will be frozen over.

I wonder if I should just turn this into a road trip, beginning and ending in Reno?  The weather looks bad from a Southerner's perspective.  Hmmm.... NorCal, or flee south, or....?

Well, it looks like you basically have three days you could road trip. Depending on how much driving you like to do in a day, a couple of trips might be:

1) Head down 395 to the points I mentioned. You could additionally go farther south and hit Death Valley for half a day or so. Overnighting in Bishop, Lone Pine, or Independence would probably be your best bets for that. You're looking at maybe ~250 miles to Death Valley, so maybe 600-700 miles total if you do the whole thing. It's a big park, so you wouldn't be able to see all of it, but you could definitely make the tourist attractions. If you don't want to travel that far, Mammoth is fun even if you don't do winter sports. Check VRBO for condo rentals that will be cheaper than any of the hotels, and often much nicer. Or you could splurge on a place like the Tamarack lodge and get a cabin by the lake and fine dining for a night.

2) Head West to California and maybe try turning North and doing highway 1 for the killer coastal highway/redwood trip. You could potentially veer into Oregon and stay in Ashland overnight, then head back to Reno via I-5/hwy395 (if open) or I-5/I-80. This is a much longer trip though, 1000-1500 miles depending on how far you go, so you're on the road most of the time. Also note that we're getting heavy rains in CA for the next week, and that often shuts down parts of HWY 1.

3) Just hang out around Reno /Tahoe/Virginia City and relax. :)

I left out heading East because there's pretty much nothing between Reno and Salt Lake City.

What was said earlier about chains still applies. Note that it doesn't mean you'll be putting them on, but the chain restrictions require you to show the cops that you have chains with you. It seems like once full restrictions go into force, they usually shut the road down anyway, so the chains are just to check the box. There are chain restriction zones along 395, 80, and 5, so any road trip you take, you're gonna run into a restriction zone (which again, may or may not be active). There should be plenty of places in the Reno / Tahoe area that will rent you chains at a reasonable cost. Heck, the car rental place there might even do it.

I'm surprised car rental agencies would let renters even put chains on the cars.  Thanks for all y'all's input.  Keep it coming.  Hell, I was thinking of a blitz trip thru Mt Ranier to Olympic NP, just do have it off the bucket list.

No idea, I was just speculating. It does bring up a tangent though of making sure you rent the right chains. Some vehicles can only use s-chains or cables. Put standard cables on them, and you might end up with hundreds to thousands of dollars of brake line and other damage. Again though, it's unlikely that you'll lend up mounting chains if you stick to the main highways. It's more about having a set for show and tell with the CHP. :)

Ski resort, hot tub, drinks by the fireplace.  I see no downsides.
Try a a little snow shoeing for exercise.

Good idea.  The Truckee river might flood downtown Reno:
