Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.

Bring me my Broadsword and a clear understanding.
Get up to the roundhouse on the cliff-top standing.
Take women and children and bed them down.
Bless with a hard heart those that stand with me.
Bless the women and children who firm our hands.
Put our backs to the north wind.
Hold fast by the river.
Sweet memories to drive us on,
for the motherland.

Hell there are worse things they could be doing.
There are five things, above all else, that make life worth living: a good relationship with God, a good woman, good health, good friends, and a good cigar.

Weird, but physically healthy activity. Better on your joints than jogging. Tails are pretty neat. About as harmless of a hobby as one can possibly have.

See, if this was just a cosplay type thing I'd be like "Oh, that's super cool! And those tails! So pretty and awesome!". I'd even be impressed by the woman for getting a job at an aquarium and using her hobby to teach kids about the ocean. That's actually really cool. How many people get to do that sort of thing? Not many.
Hell, if I had $3000 lying around I'd get me one of those tails and learn to swim in it. I bet it's awesome.

But when they start talking about how they "identify" as merpeople and that they consider their tails a prosthetic that makes them feel complete because they think their legs are weird... That's were they lose me and go from cool to really really not cool anymore.

Well, I guess they are just who showed up for the interview and agreed to be photographed.  Go to any community Rec Center and you will see worse in the pool.  (I am not a current member so I am not included at this time.  =D   )

okay, I'm not seeing how you guys are getting that they are all that fat. Obviously those tails cause some serious muffin top issues when seated a certain way, but none of the woman (even the largest) could be classified as fat.

Pick on them for legitimate stuff (and the article gives you plenty to choose from) or continue to sound like aholes.

I'd say perhaps thick.

I don't know that any of them are fat, either. Two of them look rather attractive, and the other one - well, the costume makes it hard to tell if she's really plus-sized, which is probably why she likes it so much. And one of them is a dude with an average build. Did I just call him a dude? I'm so sorry. I meant "mer-dude."

But, just from this sample, it does seem to attract women of a certain body fat percentage. Not a criticism; just an observation.

Indeed.  The swimming pool was probably to make it easy to get good shots without a dive crew camera setup, all of them together, etc...

As for the 'heftiness', it's still well on the proper side of attractiveness, but I do find it interesting.
