What are the best John Wayne westerns?
« on: February 20, 2017, 06:03:02 PM »
I just finished watching 'The Shootist', and that made me wonder: what are the best John Wayne western movies?  What says the Collective?

All of them, ya un 'Murican heathen!

But seriously...

I always had a fondness for the ones with a little humor in them. El Dorado, Rio Lobo, North To Alaska, McClintock, Big Jake, et al. Can't argue with The Searchers being one of the most visually beautiful pieces of cinema ever filmed. True Grit is always a good watch, though I have to admit I enjoy Rooster Cogburn a bit more. Too bad the Duke died before he and Katheryn Hepburn could make a couple more movies. The dynamic is just about perfect. Hellfighters is a nice change of pace from the cookie-cutter westerns. Green Berets is decent. Flying Leathernecks is formulaic but enjoyable. Oh, almost forgot How The West Was Won and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence.

Came here to say pretty much that,  lol.

With The Shootist,  you started with one of the very best.   McLintock was a good one too, but more comedy than traditional western.  Angel and the badman, The War Wagon, and  The Train Robbers are all good stuff.

The Big Trail (first starring role, and one of my faves), Angel and the Badman, Stagecoach, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, Fort Apache, In Old California, Red River, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.

That should keep you busy for a while. :)

My vote goes to THE SEARCHERS.    There are plenty of John Wayne Westerns and many are .....almost .... as good.  But I might as well be decisive.

I sadly haven't seen a lot of them, but of the ones I have I would say probably The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence is my favorite.

I wasn't even thinking of all the war movies he did, but the question was for Westerns.

Some of his war movies were in the Western Pacific . . .  ;)

However the best scene in that movie doesn't include John Wayne.

Three Godfathers, while more melodramatic, is also worth watching.

My favorite John Wayne Westerns have all been mentioned, but I'll mention them again...

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence (my all-time favorite John Wayne movie)

The Shootist

True Grit

Stage Coach

The Searchers (by far Wayne's darkest movie role)

A close second for Wayne's darkest role is Red River. This one is a sleeper as it gets forgotten in a lot of Wayne's later work.

If you liked The African Queen, then you'll probably also like John Wayne's western remake of it (the True Grit sequel). Personally, I find that Bogart > Wayne.
