I can't believe how much snow is still visible in the lower parts of the hills around us.  Hwy 20 (North Cascades Highway) is looking like just might challenge the record for the latest spring re-opening.  WashDOT always closes it sometime in November or early December due to the avalanche chutes creating too much of a danger to drivers and too much effort to keep clearing the snow.  Most years they have that highway back open by late March to early May depending on the snow pack.  The year after it was first constructed (1970-something) they couldn't reopen until June 14 which to date is the record latest reopening. 

I'm hoping they get it open before Memorial Day weekend as the towns on the east side of the pass will suffer quite a bit economically if that highway remains closed.

I don't think that will happen. I just read an article in today's paper, they still have up to 25 feet of snow up there and the avalanche chutes are still full. They plan on starting in mid-April and think it will take 8 weeks to clear it this year. It makes me wonder how late the Going to the Sun Road in Galcier  will open this year.

My condolences to all the Pacific Northwesterners here.  Four years in Forks and a fifth in Port Angeles convinced me that I couldn't handles winter there for the rest of my life.
