Snopes May Fold
« on: July 25, 2017, 09:55:05 AM »
Snopes has put out a plea for "community funding" to keep them from shutting down. They've received appropriate negative response.

I agree with the majority of the responses. I really liked Snopes when they stuck to practical "mythbusters" type stuff. Once they threw (biased) politics into the mix, they lost me. I can't remember the last time I recommended or posted a link to Snopes to check the truth of something. I trust even Wikipedia more.

Drat! They've already gone $31k over their goal of $500k.  I don't think they're going away anytime soon.
If there really was intelligent life on other planets, we'd be sending them foreign aid.

Conservatives see George Orwell's "1984" as a cautionary tale.  Progressives view it as a "how to" manual.

Liberals believe one should never let reason, logic and facts get in the way of a good emotional argument.

Thats not a very complex site they can't be using that much bandwidth.
I needed a mod to change my signature because the concept of "family friendly" eludes me.
Just noticed that a mod changed my signature. How long ago was that?

I didn't know Snopes had gone so political, so I had to read up on them a bit. Apparently it was a husband and wife team, and according to one article, it was regularly used by journalists, who let them do their fact-checking. But the couple is (or was?) in the midst of a divorce, and hubby is now consorting with some escort/porn actress. Oh, and there's some left-wing blogger doing their fact-checking now, plus somebody who ran for office as a Democrat. Yeah, I'm beginning to see why they have a problem.

They're about as reliable and impartial today as the "Politifact" people.

I used them a lot 10 or 15 years ago.  The only good thing that really sticks in my memory is they had a really good debunking page about one of the first 911 Truther emails that made the rounds soon after 911.

Amounts to the same thing...
A short lived temporary pleasure with high risk of long term suffering or death.
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

Checked some Billary report a few years ago: "Not true according to a Clinton spokesperson." Snopes flushed down the tube!
