What Kind of Bugs Are These?
« on: July 30, 2017, 01:18:58 PM »
Anyone know? This is the first time I've ever seen a bug like this. While out watering the garden this morning, a ton of them exploded out the bottom of a tomato plant. They were only under that plant and nowhere else, including other tomoatoes. I did a search for "tomato bug" and saw lots of red bugs, but nothing like these. A Flickr image search returned hits with lichen.

Kissing bugs or Stink bugs.  Smush one to find out which...

Look at this page: http://saintebaume.over-blog.com/article-plan-d-aups-grand-rassemblement-de-gendarmes-110564213.html

I'm not sure how good is Ben's French.  I'm on my phone otherwise I could do better research.

Well, since gendarmes are native to France, I'll probably just have to go with one of the Pyrrhocoridae varieties. Haven't seen anything identical yet, but that seems to be the family.

They did look awfully similar. There are apparently a lot of VERY similar bugs to the ones you came across.

Kill em with fire.
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

Kill em with fire.

On the off chance that they were the kissing bugs that scout referred to, I actually dipped into my dwindling stash of illegal malathion and nuked the area.

They look similar to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyrrhocoris_apterus, which I've been finding in our garden. They seem to be more annoying than actually harmful to anything, like box elder bugs.
