I guess it wouldn't be too bad with one instrument, like a flute, playing slowly, but get enough instruments (including singers) together in there and it seems to me it all trends toward white noise. Maybe it's like any new instrument; it's got to be played with, caressed, massaged, to get the best results...
And it must be hard to stay on key in there without a close mike and headphones.
One of the reasons the Chautaugua Auditorium in Boulder CO was touted for its excellent acoustics was the criss-crossing of all the overhead wooden rafters, which supposedly moderated unwanted echoes. Indeed, it was pretty good to my then-young ears.
I remember the Mercury (monophonic) recordings that boasted of recording with only one microphone for the entire orchestra. Sounded pretty good, actually, in those "mono" days.
Well, there it is... "THE TANK."
