It looks to me like the inserted links have gotten worse.  Whereas before we had one string of sites hidden in the header, now there are five.

The same junk is present in GunRightsMedia.com (which is apparently nearly dead).  Not on every site hosted on the same server, however.

Doesn't look like Parallels has been updated in a good long while either.

How difficult/time consuming is it to flush the crap out of the header?

Given how long this has been a problem this time it's as if we need Al Gore to reinvent the internet all over again and start from scratch or something.

How many admins do we have that can handle this sort of thing?  Hopefully more than one, in case somebody gets hit by a truck or something.  It would be a shame and all, but there should be someone else that can cull the pron site stuff from the headers and send it to fistful.  We shouldn't have all of our eggs in one basket, so to speak.

I don't see any pron site stuff in the header.

It's hidden.  Try viewing the source.

The idea is to create a bunch of links to domains for sale or porn/escort sites to make search engines value the domain more.  In order to get people to ignore it on their website they hide it using a CSS trick that renders it invisible.

The problem is, that junk is appended to the responses to asynchronous Javascript calls (when the browser asks for just a little bit of properly formatted data using Javascript instead of reloading the entire page).  In that case the additional code can screw up the request.  That is causing a number of the issues.

From what I recall Rev saying. part of this is the older version of the forum software we're using that created problems when he tried to update to the current version, and part is that Geovario gets hit by these porn jackwagons (hence GRM being hit as well).

I know nothing about forum software, but I'm curious how hard it might be to switch to different software? Is there any that lets you just click a button to migrate a site from one software to another (to not create work for the person already doing it for free)?

I also recall Rev saying that server space to handle a forum is pretty cheap. If getting off Geovario would help, I'll volunteer to pay for a three year domain subscription and three years of server space if physically migrating would help us.

Converters exist to migrate SMF to phpBB, etc. Though I don't know that SMF is the problem so much as the ancient version we're using. I don't know what hitches the version upgrade had, though.


I'm a developer not an ops guy, but given file/DB read access I'd be willing to put some time into doing a test-run on an AWS EC2 server of upgrading the SMF version, and/or migrating to alternate forum software. If successful at one or both, we could decide where to go from there with the actual site.

We'll need to wait for Rev or Nick to check in as they have "the keys to the house" as it were, and likely more info on what's going on.

I should have also mentioned in my previous post that we'd need to clear any major changes with Oleg since he's the owner. I doubt he'd have any problems with something like a forum software switch, but something like going to another domain/server would definitely need his approval. He may have reasons for staying with Geovario given his other sites are there.

I also had to just log back in and the forum is in the default font and color scheme for me, but there is also a notice about "repair settings" at the top of the page, so it could be one of the guys is poking around and resetting stuff.
