Star Trek Discovery "Influenced" by Trump
« on: September 11, 2017, 10:23:54 AM »
Jiminy Christmas. Do they have to destroy everything? I was looking forward to this series. Now not so much. Well, I'll be rooting for the Klingons anyway, since it appears they'll be the ones who most reflect my POV.

I often wonder what Firefly would be like if Whedon made it today instead of 15 years ago.

General political issues. AFAIK, they never analoged a particular current political figure. These Discovery guys seem to be going for the same shtick "Family Guy" did after Bush was elected. Pre-Bush, they made fun of everyone and were funny. Post-Bush, they mostly just attacked Bush and conservatives in general and became tiresome.

TOS even promoted Christianity (in the episode with the modern Roman Empire). None of the Trek series since then has done so, in fact The Next Generation seemed to go out of its way in the opposite direction.

I've seen a couple of speculations that John Gill from A Pattern of Force was patterned after Richard Nixon, but I think that's just filling in the blanks later that didn't exist at the time.

Sorry about that. I meant to say that some have alleged that John Gill was patterned off Richard Nixon.

Roddenberry made no bones about the series doing far more than just dabbling in social commentary. Much of the show's creation and initial scripting directly targeted social issues of the time. It wasn't until Dorothy Fontana's moderating influence that the show began taking on the more sophisticated tone which resulted in the second season's abundance of goodness.

I remember the original series had a LOT of scantily clad women (at least for that time), but maybe less than some.

Thank Bill Theiss. He had a penchant for pushing the network censor's buttons.

Our elite, libtard betters have gone full potato screeching their socialist, un-American mantra. From the NFL to whollywierd we get a never ending dose of "*expletive deleted*ck the guy on the right".

How is that working out so far?

NFL is attendance is in free fall.
The Emmy awards had the lowest rating ever.
Movie box office take is in the toilet.

I expect "them" to triple down on the shrill screeching about how evil conservatives are destroying their world.

Here's a clue for the "entertainers".
Your job is to entertain us, to make us laugh or cry appropriate to the story being told.
Your stock in trade is telling a lie with feeling.
You are the modern day equivalent of the court jester, the royal fool.
You want us to keep throwing money at you?
Here's what you do-
Shut your *expletive deleted*ing pie hole about politics and make me laugh, bitch.
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

Thinking more on it, this whole using the Klingons as political analogs is interesting to me.

The only Klingons I ever rooted against were the TOS Klingons, who were pretty much always as deceiving as a low down dirty deceiver. Then, with a change we may have started to see the foreshadowing of in The Undiscovered Country, the Klingons did in fact start to become what these producers see as "bad". Death before dishonor, handling your own problems, etc. (As a group. Obviously there were some "bad" subsets and individuals).

However, as honorable as the Klingons became, they were generally looked down upon from TNG on. I still remember how aggravated I would get when Worf would recommend shields and arming photon torpedoes, and some tactical nobody like Troy would roll her eyes and then Picard would start off on some SJW lecture.

The Klingons became what to me were people with an honorable code to admire, but to the producers, and I guess to a generation growing up on those post TOS series, something to avoid becoming because it wasn't "enlightened". Now they are once again the deplorables of the ST universe.

Like I said in the OP, I'll be rooting for the Klingons in this new series (if it's even something I want to watch).
