So tomorrow is 10 days
« on: January 06, 2018, 09:59:43 PM »
Tomorrow will be 10 days since my last cigarette.  I haven't gone more than 8 or 9 days on previous quit.  Helps that I don't smoke in my house, or at least the heated parts. I smoke in my workshop, a part of my unheated garage, and it's too damned cold to do that now.  Smoked in my car headed to or coming home from work, and at single digit temps it's too cold for that as well.  Feel good.  Feel less congested in my chest. I find myself thinking about it, more than I would have imagined.  Other than that, no real problems.  Figure I'd post here, now, so you all will hold me accountable. 😉

If you get desperate, go for the nicotine lozenges.

They satisfy the craving, but because the nicotine lozenge doesn't spike as fast, or at all maybe, they don't really feed the addiction either.

I promise not to duck.

Stay the course. Your lungs, throat and mouth will thank you for it.

Most of my extended family in my parents' generation smoked. And an abysmally high percentage of them died of cancer -- lung, throat, you name it.

Since 07 Sep 17 for me.  Cold turkey from 1-1/2 to 2 packs a day.  Coincidentally, this is 07 Jan 18, so that's 4 months total.

I think I can, I think I can, I think I can, I thought I could.

Good effing riddance.

Still get "pop" urges at certain habitual light up a cigarette times, but purely mechanical (not chemical) and gone in a couple of seconds.  Most prominent one is when I get on the road in my car.  I make a joke out of it.  Ha !  Gotcha !  I knew that would happen !  Another "pop" one is when I hang up the phone.

Seems like the conclusion of an act is the trigger.

Saving a lot of money, to boot.  Call it fifty bucks a week.  You do the math.  On my budget, that's a lot.

Congratulations, Chris.  (Don't let the withdrawal affect your job.)

Keep it up, Dude. I used the patches to quit for 4 months and was doing fine until my Mother threw me a curve I didn't see coming with her *expletive deleted*ing will. Now that we're seeing some positive movement about getting the estate settled, and I'm actually seeing a way out from under the enormous albatross that she threw on me, I'm looking at quitting again. I'll likely go the patch route again.

I know you didn't do that, and that makes what you're doing all the more admirable and amazing.

Besides, as I've told you, if you start smoking again I'm going to come out there and kick your ass. And we both know that we don't want that.

Glad to hear it, Buckeye.

This is coming from a 2 pack-a-day smoker (menthol!).  Started in college. Continued for another 30 years or so.
About 3 months ago, I passed the "4,000 days without a smoke" marker.

If my sorry ass could do it, so can you.  Keep at it, Chris.

Good to hear!  Keep it going.

I hope you have plenty of support from people around you to help you avoid it during that hard spot where you want to justify having just one.  My brother was trying to quit dipping for quite some time.  He would stop for weeks and then someone would offer some at 1 AM after some beers and he would start up again.  He finally was able to say 'no' one of those times (with help) and never did it again.

Similar, and a warning.  Started at 13 yo in high school, quit for 11 years in 1978, started again in 1993 when I married a woman who smoked.

I still remember taking that first re-start one out of her cigarette pack on the kitchen table.  "You sure you want to do that?" she asked.  I thought I was strong enough to make it "only one."

Kept smoking until mentioned above, 07 Sep 2017.

Today is day 15.  Tempted many times, but hanging tough so far.  Noticed that foods are tasting stronger/more flavorful.  Been having a second cup of coffee in the morning,  as there's no nicotine wake up while driving to work.  Feeling good, though.  And no one has died.  😉

Sorry. Busy day.  Still good.  19 days today.  Still cold  outside...like 6 now...so the workshop is around 20, which helps a lot.  No where to smoke if I wanted to!

Actually, looking forward to starting the Couch to 5K program and trying to get back into better shape.

Good job, Chris.  Keep it going.
If there really was intelligent life on other planets, we'd be sending them foreign aid.

Conservatives see George Orwell's "1984" as a cautionary tale.  Progressives view it as a "how to" manual.
