Salesmanship
« on: March 12, 2018, 07:51:48 PM »
What kind of travel agent advertises a tour by telling prospects they're likely to die?

Elon Musk. https://pjmedia.com/video/elon-musk-warns-first-travelers-to-mars-good-chance-youll-die/

Quote
"For the early people that go to Mars, it will be far more dangerous," Musk told HLN on Monday. "I mean, really, it kind of reads like Shackleton's ad for Antarctica explorers: It's difficult, dangerous, good chance you'll die, excitement for those who survive."

People do things all the time that have a high risk of death.
Climbing mountains, Hang gliders, commenting on the size of your wife's butt... Any number of extreme sports carry an elevated risk of buying the farm prematurely.
were I of the proper age, health and unattached, and possessing the proper skill set, I'd be interested as hell.
Pushing the boundaries of human knowledge can carry real risk.
Is it worth it? I don't know, but these would be the only ones that could tell you, if they were able.
Chaffee, Grissom, White, Jarvis, McAuliffe, McNair, Onizuka, Resnik, Scobee, Smith, Anderson, David Brown, Chawla, Clark, Husband, McCool, Ramon.
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

I think the Shackleton reference is apropos.

Quote
Men wanted for hazardous journey. Low wages, bitter cold, long hours of complete darkness. Safe return doubtful. Honour and recognition in event of success.

Great book if any of you haven't read it.

I've been wanting to pick it up but haven't yet. I wonder if that quote inspired the ad in Glory Road.

Sign me up if I weren't married. Death is unavoidable anyways.
