Instant Pot
« on: April 15, 2018, 01:29:26 AM »
SWMBO got an Instant Pot (basically a computer controlled pressure cooker) for an early Mother's Day gift from her mom.  She's out at women's wine night, so I took the liberty of doing a teriyaki chicken and rice dish with it to try it out.

I was pleasantly surprised at how well it worked.  This might be a good way to set up dinner on busy nights.  Toss frozen meat and whatever other ingredients into the thing in the morning, set the timer, and at dinner time hit the pressure relief valve and serve up food.

Anyone else been using one?

Mtnbkr and his family have one. Interesting piece of kit. But, after hearing what it could, and could not, do, I think I'm just going to stick with my jiggler pressure cooker.

I have been wondering about it.  I also have a very nice Fagor manual pressure cooker and I have not really been using that, so would the IP be redundant, I am thinking.

I've watched some Tubeyou videos on various models.  Since I don't have a pressure cooker, I've been thinking of getting one after tax season is over...

I have one, never had a pressure cooker before. Definitely wouldn't have bought it if I already had one. We also got rid of our ricemaker when we bought it so it's not a huge loss of cupboard space. It's not magical or anything but it has come in handy to be able to saute & pressure cook & slow cook all in the same pot.

We have one and the wife loves it.

I still prefer to cook in the oven or on the burners though. I don't care that it takes longer.

Got one for Christmas and tried it out last week with a roast.  Gotta find some other recipes,  as it only saved me an hour and the finished product wasn't great.

That said, it saves a pile of time doing vegetables.  Carrots and potatoes are way the hell faster than using a roaster.

Wifey has two of the same model and really likes them.  She tries out new recipes all the time in the pots, and so far everything has been pretty tasty.
She's a great cook and loves to cook.  That can be a dangerous combination.  The proof is in my expanding waistline.

Have one.
Beef roasts are much better in the insta-pot than if cooked in a slow cooker.
Frozen to cooked bratwurst in 8 minutes (yes its heresy to not grill them, but it was dead of winter, and I needed a quick meal in a pinch).

OK, we just bought the IP 8 quart Duo Plus.  It is an Amazon Deal of the Day today, and it is selling for $ 100, which is a $ 60 discount.  Even though it is just the two of us, we thought that the 8 quart size would be useful for the bulk cooking/cryovac/freezing that we like to do.  Now we need to start finding recipes.

Darn, that's a righteous size... If I didn't already have a pressure cooker I'd be all over that deal.

The wife got me the 6qt duo for father's day.  Love it so far.  Made sloppy joes the other night that were awesome, did sesame chicken last week.

One failure (on our part), the wife made cream of potato soup.  She followed an 8qt recipe.  The 6qt did not have the heating capacity to bring that much liquid up to temp and actually pressurize.  At least not in the time she was willing to wait.

Uhm... How did she fit 8 quarts worth of soup in a 6 quart IP?

She had the 6qt liner filled all the way to the rim.  You aren't supposed to do that, 2/3 with liquid is the max.  It wasn't really 8qt of soup, it was a recipe optimized for the 8qt instapot, about 6qt of liquid.

I did a corned beef Monday night. 90 minutes on it pull and tent, toss in carrots and potatoes and 5 minutes later food was done.

We got ours last Prime Day, so a year ago and it seems to be failing.

It's taking longer to come to pressure and it's leaving thing under-cooked even though we are cooking things for the indicated time.

It was awesome now it's not. Are they not built to last? Did we get a dud? It's a head scratcher for sure.

Do IPs have seals that have to be replaced periodically?

Yep, looks like they do. Replace the seals. See if that helps.

Clean the seal and make sure it hasn't become torn or otherwise damaged. Second thing to check is the pressure release. IIRC they can be flipped into different positions. Maybe yours is stuck on the wrong setting?

Thank you both. That link is a great resource.

I was worried that it might be disturbances in the sub-emissive phase-conjugate graviton autophasers. And you know how expensive those are to fix!
