Yanny or Laurel?
« on: May 16, 2018, 09:30:38 AM »
Which do you hear, Yanny or Laurel?

I clearly heard "Yanny" in the original clip, but in the clip that changes semitones (sorry it's Mother Jones), from +5 semitones on, I hear "Laurel". I found it fascinating that just changing pitch would create a completely dissimilar word.

So why are people sharing this clip, anyway? Was it recorded and shared just for this purpose? Is it a secret, Russian plot to Trumpify our elections?

It's a plan of Trump's secret police. If you heard "Laurel" in the original, it means you're a commie-nazi-hippie-pinko and you will be rounded up shortly. If you heard "Yanny", you'll be getting a tax break.

And the Gileadites captured the fords of the Jordan against the Ephraimites. And when any of the fugitives of Ephraim said, “Let me go over,” the men of Gilead said to him, “Are you an Ephraimite?” When he said, “No,” they said to him, “Then say Shibboleth,” and he said, “Sibboleth,” for he could not pronounce it right. Then they seized him and slaughtered him at the fords of the Jordan.

I hear "Laurel" on all. Muted in the mid tones, but still there. However, my high-frequency hearing loss is definitely dampening the harmonics that cause the "Yanni" audio ghosting. If I close my eyes and concentrate I can hear "Yanni" with reasonable clarity.

"Jerry"

IMHO, if you hear Yanni or Laurel, it's because the title suggested you would hear one or the other.

Except if you go to the clip with the tone change, unless they doctored it, there is a clear difference, and the word sounds are separately distinctive enough that I have a really hard time believing that I could mis-hear "Yanni" as "Laurel". "Yanni" vs "Jerry" I could chalk up as psychological. I'm willing to believe the former could be physiological on the auditory side.

I wondered about that, when I first heard it on the news this morning. They said Yanny first.

On the Mother Jones clip, I heard Laurel pretty distinctly, depending on the pitch. It ain't just the power of suggestion.

I only listened to the clip in one article, and it didn't have tone or pitch controls.

I just read that researchers have discovered a way to insert commands to Alexa and Siri in seemingly innocuous recordings that are inaudible to human ears, but can be picked up by your phone (or Dot).

And then this internet sensation to get everyone to click and listen to the same thing pops up...

1. Go to link in OP.

2. Scroll down to 3rd embedded video, the one with "Mother Jones" in the upper right corner.

3. Listen to said video.

4. Prepare to be dazzled!

5. ???

6. What, you thought there was profit? It's Mother Jones. Your profit will go to help struggling Palestinian protesters.

Truth be told, I didn't hear either Yanni or Laurel.

What I heard sounded MORE like Yanni, but it wasn't yanni.
