What caliber for cougar?
« on: May 19, 2018, 06:21:05 PM »
https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/eastside/1-dead-1-injured-in-cougar-attack-on-eastside/

Just one of the reasons that I keep a lightweight .357 in the handlebar bag of my bicycles.  I am pretty certain I have ridden my MTB in this very area; it is a popular MTB trail.

A Magnum of Chardonnay usually keeps 'em tame.

Debatable, but from what I've read about their attack mode (from the rear), a straight-blade or switchblade knife might be a better defense than a gun.

Now, if you see it first, a gunshot would probably scare it away, disunirregardless of caliber.

What?  You don't carry a gun?  What's the matter with you anyhow?

1. Not the eastside, bunch of westside elitists who think the state stops at the Cascades. ;)

2. I wonder if they tried to outrun the cougar once they noticed it and it moved off a ways, which would trigger the "fleeing prey" instinct in the cougar?

3. I think the correct response may have been to place the bike between them and the cougar and be more assertive, fleeing (running) is by far and away the wrong thing to do.

4. I always have a cougar tag with me when predator hunting. Using a call for coyotes can also bring in other critters looking for food.

5. Cougars are thin skinned, any caliber is usually good, from 22 Mag to whatever you want to use. I hunt 'yotes with a 22-250 and a 220 Swift and usually carry a 10mm pistol so I don't feel at all undergunned with the critters found in the PNW woods (I guess to be 100% correct it would be the Inland Northwest), except maybe brown bear but those are pretty rare here, if here at all. When mushroom hunting or huckleberry picking I opt for a 12 gauge with slugs. I have yet to have a mushroom attack me after a well placed 12g round.

Paging KD5NRH ...

I prefer the sugar mama type that provide their own booze.

As for the caliber I use, well, that's getting a little personal, isn't it?

Speaking of cougars, this is a picture of our very local 4 legged cougar from a few nights ago. This is right on the edge of our development.

The cougar may have been starving when it attacked the cyclists.

They really need to bring back hound hunting for cougars in this state, and up the quota for hunter kills, at least for the toms if not also the females.

I would think the cougars would add to the excitement of cycling in some areas.  Adding hounds to the mix might be a little too exciting for the cyclists.

When will the local cougars be added to the welfare/food stamp roles?  Don't worry, feeding them doesn't encourage the wrong behavior.  Just make sure the people bringing the are riding bicycles and wearing safety helmets.

We had one in my neighborhood a few months back, probably strayed from up north. Was spotted < mile from my house, wife saw it about 5 miles south of my house the day before it was spotted closer.

Ohio man calls police on pig following him home

Quote
Police in Elyria, Ohio, say they thought the unidentified man must have been drunk or hallucinating when he called for backup after failing to shake the swine.

The North Ridgeville Police Department said they received the call at 5:26 a.m. Saturday morning. Upon arrival, they discovered the man, who was totally sober but still being followed by the pig near the city's Amtrak station.

Yes, that is the pig sitting in the back of a police car.  It was someone's pet.

Locally there was a potbellied pig that the Sheriff's department rounded up.  I asked if they used the opportunity for a BBQ.
The response: "We wouldn't hurt one of our own."
