Add this to the list of Trump accomplishments?
« on: May 26, 2018, 02:29:04 AM »
http://www.newser.com/story/259785/new-executive-orders-curb-civil-service-protections.html

IMHO this is long overdue. I see it more often in my state's government, because I don't have a lot of regular dealings with federal employees, but the general concept of government workers getting pay that's equal to or (usually) better than the private sector while simultaneously receiving far better benefits, retirement, and protection against being fired or even penalized for substandard performance is an affront to taxpayers and to logic.

It means they'll all vote for the Democrats in the next election. But they probably did in 2016, so it doesn't change anything.

I know from talking to state employees here at home that their union has them brainwashed into always voting Democratic. Most of the ones I have talked to are actually afraid to vote Republican -- or even to sit home and not vote. I guess the union has spies and enforcers to make certain that everyone toes the party line.

Only counts for his list if he goes to the agencies with cameras in tow to do the "You're fired!" Senior officials he doesn't like he should just fire via Twitter so we have something entertaining on the errornet.

I'm a federal employee of a certain plumage.  I'm inclined to agree that my wages are far higher than one might expect for a receiving clerk in the private sector, but I also have lots of duties related to my military obligation that I have to take care of M-F because there simply isn't enough time for it on drill weekends.  So I consider it a wash.

As far as being fired for poor performance, I suppose it depends on how poor.  Obviously I can be fired on the spot for something egregious; theft, threats of violence, refusing to do any work, etc.  I can also be technically fired for three consecutive unexcused absences but this is very rarely enforced.  But for poor performance in general, it would take a minimum of one year of me only hitting 75% or less of my performance standards.  "Unsat" for the first six months, they'll wag their finger at me and if I'm due for a raise, I don't get it.  Unsat for another six months, buh bye.

For something more nuanced, we do have a union, but membership is optional, so they're pretty darn low key as far as unions go.

Do you happen to know your average and the general average percentage?

I've worked plenty of places where those were kept artificially low so managers could all brag about their teams' "150+% production."

It means Trump wants federal workers to do their jobs rather than spending all day on union activities.

So now they can only spend 1.25 days per week doing union crap on our dime.

I'm afraid I have no way of knowing, I'm the only one with my particular job series on the entire base.  However, all technicians are rated from Outstanding to Unsatisfactory in several areas of responsibility, then the final score is averaged.

When I worked at Airborne Express, the union stewards could work up to 60 hours per week (Which was also the DoT maximum on-duty hours for drivers) on union work.

I know that at one station there was a steward that did nothing file grievances all day, every day, 60 hours per week (40 hours of straight time, and 20  hours of OT at 1.5 times the straight time pay).

In some cases the company employee is getting paid by the company but actually doing work for the union.  He may be actually working, or he may be sleeping on a couch in the union office.  I think there is more chance for couch time than actual work.

What's funny is that as a BUE (Bargaining Unit Employee, ie covered by the union), the first one makes it easier for management types, like underperforming managers, or those who do stupid *expletive deleted*it like verbally threaten employees, to be fired.
What's not funny is that they will just protect their own like they've always done.
We have a supervisor in the building who's threatened employees twice (while they were working traffic mind you) and nothing substantial has been done about it.

As far as how much the union rep works....
Ours is expected to maintain currency in his area, which is 16 hours of actual scope time working planes per month.
And he's responsible for a facility that has something like 300 union employees, operates 24/7, he heads up all collaboration with management, etc etc.  Our union president has a *expletive deleted*it ton of duties.
As a union we negotiate the amount of time a rep gets by facility needs.  Smaller facilities don't need their rep doing duties full time.
Ours, we need two or three full time but he's the only one.  Our area rep doesn't get any official time unless it's negotiated for specific items and that's rare.

He should simply repeal JFK's Executive Order 10988 that allowed federal employees to unionize.  Hell, FDR, Hero of the Proletariat, was against public employee unions.

How many microseconds would it take for a judge to declare that unconstitional?  ;/

About as long as it took for them to declare Trump's ending of Obama's unconstitutional DACA to be declared unconstitutional.
