The Longest Day

Somehow, "Happy D-Day" did not seem appropriate.

"Have a reflective D-Day" seems too long.  Un-catchy.
WHATEVER YOUR DEFINITION OF "INFRINGE " IS, YOU SHOULDN'T BE DOING IT.

How about, "A moment of silence for those who gave all to save many on this day in history?"
I might not last very long or be very effective but I'll be a real pain in the ass for a minute!

Lest we forget.
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

Many men are there to stay ....

I posted this to my facebook page yesterday.

It's some absolutely fascinating listening. +- 24 hours of American newscasts reporting on the invasion, including addresses by various world leaders.

What's really fascinating is that the first news of the invasion as reported by American newscasters didn't come from American sources - it came from German radio broadcasts that were intercepted by American and British listeners.

The Rule of LGOPs
*

After the demise of the best laid Airborne plan, a most terrifying effect occurs on the battlefield.

This effect is known as the Rule of LGOPs. This is, in its purest form, small groups of pissed-off 19- year old American (or in this case British) Paratroopers. They are well-trained, armed-to-the-teeth and lack serious adult supervision. They collectively remember the Commander’s intent as “March to the sound of the guns and kill anyone who is not dressed like you…” …or something like that. Happily they go about the day’s work…

Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.

Bring me my Broadsword and a clear understanding.
Get up to the roundhouse on the cliff-top standing.
Take women and children and bed them down.
Bless with a hard heart those that stand with me.
Bless the women and children who firm our hands.
Put our backs to the north wind.
Hold fast by the river.
Sweet memories to drive us on,
for the motherland.
