Mandalay Bay Resort suing victims of Las Vegas shooting.

Not for cash, it's just to get the lawsuits thrown out.

While it might make sense as a legal tactic, this is going to be a PR nightmare.

I'm not a lawyer so don't know the ins and outs of this sort of thing but certainly there's another path they could take here? Like letting it go to court and seeing if the suits could be dismissed then. Or if they lost, drag out the process through appeals and see if you can get the verdicts overturned.

I was noticing their claim that it was terrorism.  There were a lot of questions unanswered about how the guy got all the guns and ammo up into the room as well as some of the other things that happened.  I always assumed it was the casino(s) that were working to keep the security video and such out of the public eye.  Maybe it is the police and FBI and other law enforcement entities trying to hide the involvement of someone else.  I agree it is a PR nightmare whether or not this lawsuit succeeds.

They are claiming it was terrorism because that's their key to being exempted from liability. They had [some] anti-terrorism measures in place, and the law says if they did they are exempt from liability. So they need to have the case classified as terrorism, and so far the aw-thaw-rih-tays haven't chosen to do so. So they want a judge to do it for them.

I'm sure they have assessed the potential PR hit against the certain financial hit if thousands of people sue them, and made their decision based on the monetary bottom line projections.

Quote
Section 2656f(d) of Title 22 of the United States Code
(d)…
(1) the term "international terrorism" means terrorism involving citizens or the
territory of more than one country;
(2) the term "terrorism" means premeditated, politically motivated violence
perpetrated against non-combatant targets by subnational groups or
clandestine agents;
and
(3) the term "terrorist group" means any group practicing, or which has
significant subgroups which practice, international terrorism.
I'm sure there are other definitions as well, but that would be strange to apply given what we have heard about the case.

Good luck with that, it took years to define Nidal Hasan's shooting spree as terrorism, despite him basically outright testifying that he did it for terrorism and was an ancillary member of ISIS or such.

And the families of those killed and the soldiers injured who survived wanted that ruling because then it becomes combat injuries and deaths, and those pay out better.
