Iceberg lettuce is the best lettuce...
« on: August 10, 2018, 08:23:00 PM »
...says this person at the New Yorker.

I like it but it is boring to look at and so I like to have other greens along with it in a salad.

However there is nothing better than the nice crisp crunch of a piece of iceberg on a burger. Of course it has to be crisp. Getting some wilted toupee of a leaf on one's burger becomes a dispiriting disposal operation.

When I make a salad at home I use a head of iceberg ans a small container of 50/50 mix (spring mix/spinach), it's yummy.

Iceberg lettuce turns Brown in minutes in air, faster in your gut. It's only use is if you feel to good and want GI tract distress with extra methane. Zero nutrient rubbish.

I like iceburg. Like many things it's been so overdone that it's now looked down on.

Yeah, no. The only thing I regularly get iceberg on is subway... And mostly because it's habit and seems like I should even though it brings nothing to the taste of my sub and just makes less room for what I want.

I like iceberg, but because I am lazy, I prefer romaine. It comes in nice, big leaves, loosely attached. That makes it really simple to tear off just what you need for your sammitch, and you can cut/tear some up for salad, without getting those big, thick stalk-looking chunks that always show up in iceberg-heavy salads.

I know a guy in his fifties who remarked to me that, when he was a kid in Illinois, lettuce WAS iceberg. That's all there was. And this guy's family was in the grocery business. It was the same in the 90s, at least as far as I knew.

The fact that we have 79 varieties of everything at the grocery store is something I really like about the current millennium.
