Multiple home gas explosions in Boston
« on: September 13, 2018, 08:11:13 PM »
https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2018/09/13/multiple-gas-explosions-set-more-than-homes-ablaze-across-three-communities-north-boston/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.b79aded3ddb3

I've read 39 explosions in one article, and 70 in another. So far with 60 to 100 fires. Sounds like some sort of over pressure problem in the gas lines.

The comments are fun...
"so I ended up getting the above because I didn't want to make a whole production of sticking something between my knees and cranking. To me, the cranking on mine is pretty effortless, at least on the coarse setting. Maybe if someone has arthritis or something, it would be more difficult for them." - Ben

Do you know why there are exactly 239 beans in each can?

If there was one more it would be too fahty.

Hmm.

From memory, there was an example a couple of years ago where a gas leak in one spot allowed the gas to travel along the underground pipe, come up somewhere else some distance away, a commercial building as I recall, and go off there.

Took authorities a while to figure out what had happened.

Anyone else remember that?

I wonder if something like this could have happened, where an ignition at one point traveled along the pipeline gas-air mix ourside the pipe and lit up the gas leaking up in other homes.

Just working from memory.

My guess is someone working on the line or a malfunction overpressurized a large segment, causing seals/valves/etc. to begin leaking.

Yes. I don't remember any more of the specifics than you do, but I do recall such an incident.

OK, thanks, Hawkmoon.  I still have a mental image of the illustration of how it happened in my head, but I can't pin it down any better.  Maybe it wasn't in the U.S.

A snippet just popped into my head.  The building that blew up was a department store IIRC.

My guess is someone working on the line or a malfunction overpressurized a large segment, causing seals/valves/etc. to begin leaking.
Possible of course.

Well, time will tell, I guess.

Were I the PR person for Columbia I would call in sick. Forever.

Any municipal gas systems coupled to the internet? I really hope not, but I bet I know the answer. Look look CEO! You can manage the pipeline. From the cloud!!!! Dogbert wags
