Ballad of Buster Scruggs

Coen Brothers. Tim Blake Nelson. Old west. Catchy music. I may have to see this one.

For some reason I get a distinct Rustler's Rhapsody vibe.

This actually looks pretty good, and I see that I can view it on Netflix for free starting in mid-November.

That looks good. It's got a lot of good actors in it.

Let me just say that I think more Westerns should be made.  It is a genre that we did well for decades, I enjoy a good Western, and I think it is unfortunate that the market doesn't seem to call for them much any more.

Looks like it will be pretty good. Will have to keep this in mind around that time.

Well, that was interesting.

It's six completely unrelated shorts. The first one is pretty goofy and then after that they just get darker and darker. The second one with James Franco is excellent, very dry dark humor and has a real spaghetti western feel. Two of them are not comedic at all and the last one is just weird but good.

All in all, I highly recommend it.

I concur with this assessment.

My favorite was "All Gold Canyon." "Meal Ticket" just made me sad. "The Gal Who Got Rattled" I won't say anything about, just watch it...but it's a watch.

We watched this evening.
Thoroughly enjoyed it.
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

It's the Coen brother's. No Country For Old Men, Oh, Brother Where Art Thou?

Don't let the goofy fool you. It's not going to be what it seems on first glance.

I really tried to watch it.  I failed.  This has to be one of the absolute worst pieces of garbage to ever hit the screen.

I watched it last night.  Some were good while others were just odd and depressing.

I agree.

I watched the whole thing, but the only way I could do that was to distract myself with something else.  Just to add to my misery, I just watched Fargo, too.  That is just as bad.

The Coen brothers don’t write screenplays; they write live action cartoons.  The Coen brothers don’t create characters; the creat caricatures.

Finally had a chance to see it over the weekend. It was... not what I expected. Enjoyable, yes, but not the satirical romp I had in mind. After watching the trailer again I paid more attention to the darker undertones.

Couple of thoughts...

Tim Blake Nelson's gleefully clueless but somehow darkly wise portrayal is spot on.

The orator in Meal Ticket looked ever so familiar but had me scratching my head. If finally dawned on me it's the actor who played the spoiled, bratty cousin Dudley Dursley in Harry Potter. Quite a change from a pudgy kid to someone who appears an accomplished thespian.

Tom Waits is, well, Tom Waits. Ditto Steven Root. "Ahhh... crazy business!"

As others have mentioned, Mortal Remains was far too short. Saul Rubinek and Brendan Gleeson are a joy to watch. Their characters, as usual, end up entirely memorable without detracting one whit from what was a brilliant ensemble piece.

Still haven't figured out what the triple-thump thing in the trailer was supposed to represent, though.

Andrew Klavan said something I really wasn't expecting. He thinks the Coen Bros are making Christian films - especially this one.
