Who's in the Army now?
« on: November 13, 2018, 06:56:00 PM »
I need some background for setting up a story. Where are infantry and Special Forces units stationed now, when Stateside? Things have shifted around since I last thought I knew something. For example, I understand that the 4th Infantry Division (my old unit from Vietnam) isn't at Fort Hood any longer.

Who is where these days?

Okay, the 4th is back at Fort Carson. Where are other infantry and special forces units based?

If it's a story, as in fiction, why can't you just make up stuff?  Why do you need contemporaneous factual data?

If it's a story, as in an article, why can't you just refer readers to sources like Janes?  Why do  you need to spoon feed contemporaneous factual data?

Ft Bragg, NC has plenty of Special Ops units.  Also home to the Army's SpecOps aviation units.

McDill Air Force base in Tampa is home to USSOCOM, I think.

I'm sorry I edited that to put in an extra {tinfoil} because it will look like I added the article clause in response to the following posts.

I didn't.  I still think reference to standard sources would be a safer idea, but you guys know more about sensitivity of data than I.

Please proceed.

Locations of our SpecOps bases is public information.  No tinfoil headgear necessary.

1 ID Ft. Riley, KS
2 ID Ft. Lewis, WA and Korea (2nd Brigade)
3 ID Ft Stewart, GA
4 ID Ft. Carson, CO
7 ID Ft. Lewis, WA  (HQ only)
10 ID (MTN) Ft. Drum, NY
25 ID (Light) Schofield Barracks HI  (1st SBCT, Ft Wainwright, AK; 4th BCT (ABN), Ft. Richardson, AK)
82 ABN Ft. Bragg, NC
101 ABN (AASSLT) Ft. Campbell, KY
1 AD Ft. Bliss, TX
1 CAV Ft. Hood, TX

The Army has gone to a more Brigade structure then a Division structure.  There are "rotational units", brigades that go to Germany or Korea to train using existing equipment that remains in place, so all we do is fly troops and their personal equipment to that location, rather than having troops permanently stationed in Korea or Germany.  So the Army saves money not shipping Joe, his family, and all their *expletive deleted*it to Germany for 4 years; but instead, he gets a 9 month separation from his family while he trains in Korea.

McDill Air Force base in Tampa is home to USSOCOM, I think.

160th SOAR is in Ft. Campbell last I checked.  There are some Air Force special ops units at Pope Field (Ft. Bragg) but not Army.

Bragg has Army Special Operations, as well as JSOC. (JSOC includes SFOD-Delta)

Macdill does indeed hold both USSOCOM and USCENTCOM but both are headquarters units vs. Boots on Ground kinda folks.
