I was actually surprised at that as well. To somewhat veer a thread (again), that's also an interesting number to potentially extrapolate a total illegal population. I could be wrong, but I'm guessing the percentage of the total illegal population that will walk into a gun store and do the paperwork is pretty low.

I didn't see a timeframe for the collected records, but that's an awfully large number.

Is that the transactional history of rejects or the list of people who would be rejected if they tried?

DAMN YOU NRA!
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

I would have thought that domestic violence and substance use (most notably marijuana) would have ranked much higher. My neighbor the gunsmith/FFL says a fair number of people check the substance use box due to legal marijuana in Washington state, and are surprised and horrified when they are declined forever more.

Given the present-day composition of people in the general population, I'd be surprised if illegal/unlawful aliens weren't at the top of just about any sample drawn in the U.S.

I'm not grinning when I say that.

I have heard a few people say the highest cause of rejected background checks is false positives, meaning legal, but name is close someone on ban list.  I am not sure where that came from.

I get delayed every time I buy a gun.  Usually if I put my SSN on the form the delay is just a few minutes, but last time it was 4 days.   I think that means they didn't even process that one and the time ran out.

My question is...

How many of those instances in which a prohibited person attempted to purchase a firearm resulted in prosecution?

That has actually happened to me twice before I bought my handgun license.

^^^I now give my SSN, since a couple of times I had a substantial delay because someone with my first and last name is apparently in the system as some sort of miscreant.

Not very many.  Probably not more then triple digits.  Maybe even just double digits.

Did NICS fail to get the memo that diversity is our strength?

How are these proto US citizens going to protect themselves from the roving gangs of White Nationalists?
For the invisible things of him since the creation of the world are clearly seen, being perceived through the things that are made, even his everlasting power and divinity, that they may be without excuse. Because knowing God, they didn’t glorify him as God, and didn’t give thanks, but became vain in their reasoning, and their senseless heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.
