Simple explanation on Facebook 10-year challenge flap?

I poked around a little and all I can figure out is that somehow, having image data on people ten years apart is dangerous in terms of data mining and face recognition.  Somehow.

Most of the articles on it are beyond my non-wired, IT-averse understanding.  I'd appreciate a single-syllable explanation, if possible, as to why this might be a big deal.

???

The articles also look like the authors are being paid by the column-inch.

Or column-pixel.

Or something column-IT-ish.

At thy right hand pleasures for evermore.
