I must be buying stuff that has the Chinese knock-off of that. Half the time I pull on it, the tab rips off and I still end up needing a knife to remove the seal. Grrr.

You don't pull on it.  You kind of roll it off.  Never had one fail, myself.  Oh well, lucky in pull-tabbing, lucky in love, I reckon.

OTOH, there might be that Chinese factor.

Funny -- I have 100% failure rate with Costco maple syrup.

Good tech, but still not as good as those resealable openings on the top of, say, a tray of Oreo cookies.

Its 2019, why the hell doesn't cold cereal come in a ziplock bag?

Agreed.  The glued bags in the boxes suck just as much as they always have.

I was going to say that is completely useless, but I suppose it can keep the crumbs in as you throw the empty package away.

Yeah, you gotta get the knock-off cereals in the giant 5 lb bags if you want fancy schmancy tech like zip locks.

I, for one, hate those things. They are on the odoban bottles and they are evil.

They give you hope that getting the bottle open will be easy, and then crush your hope by ripping or slipping.

As others have said, I've never had a problem with them.

As such, we seem to have two groups here:  Ones who constantly have problems and those that don't.

As such, for those that have problems, can you please explain HOW you attempt to open these?

I use the method 230RN suggests - rather than just pulling, I pick an end and give a steady rolling pull so that it releases the seal under the tab, then expands that.  I think that if one just pulls, you're putting force on the entire seal, and that may be beyond the strength of the plastic tab.

Excellent analysis, and thank you.

Hum... maybe I'm doing it wrong...

I always grab the tab and then pull the seal off at right angles to what is being shown in the pictures.

Malt-O-Meal cereal comes in supposedly resealable zip top bags.

I say supposedly because... the bag material that they use is so incredibly flimsy that pretty much every time I've tried to open the bags they've torn to hell and back and I end up putting the cereal into a plastic Gladware container.

I bought mini frosted shredded wheat over the weekend and the bag didn't so much as tear as "got caught in a shredder and then ran itself through a blender" when it tore. Miniwheats everywhere.

Seren enjoyed the ones that hit the floor, though.

Yeah, whatever that particular bag type is made of, I always tear them to hell when attempting to pull them open. I end up just keeping scissors in the kitchen and cut the tops of the bags off, then clip them closed.

It tears open the cereal bag with teeth. It fills a bowl. It puts the remaining cereal in a Tupperware container. It burps the Tupperware. It attends the following Tupperware party and shares anecdotal evidence of Tupperware superiority.

Ben finally said,
"I end up just keeping scissors in the kitchen and cut the tops of the bags off, then clip them closed."

It seemed to take a while for someone to state the obvious, so thanks.

I use those small Harbor Freight clips. They're available elsewhere, too.  They're handy for all kinds of things.

I also keep a cheap pair of scissors in every room.

You know, for MOST people, the obvious really doesn't have to be stated.

I've ripped. I've rolled. Sometimes I'll get them halfway before they rip.

A lot of times my hands are wet or I just can't get a good grip and they end up mangled and useless.

Cheap stainless steel scissors would probably eliminate that problem.  Then you go to the clips op cit. or spring clothespins.
