Amazon hits New York where it hurts.

Their budget. Nothing like losing untold billion$ because your politicritters are a bunch of socialist idiots.

https://www.foxnews.com/tech/amazon-pulls-out-of-plan-to-build-new-york-city-headquarters

I'm sure NY will try to spin it to their advantage but it's kinda hard to put a positive face on 25,000 jobs and $10 billion-plus in revenue going somewhere else.

I was just going to post this. Very interesting "left eating their own" dynamic. Apparently Cuomo, DeBlasio, and 70% of the area was enthusiastic about Amazon, but the small and vocal minority of socialists killed the deal. You can't blame Amazon one bit. I'm betting now there will be protests about Amazon leaving by the same people who hated on them. "We didn't want them to leave - we just wanted them to pay for our free stuff!"

While Amazon will be better off in any number of other places, full disclosure, I wouldn't care to have them set up shop in Boise, for example. Not because of Amazon specifically, but because of the employee social culture they would bring in. While I think they are not as bad as Google employees, I still wouldn't want to be having a beer at a pub on the Boise River minding my own business and listening to outdoor music while packing heat on my hip, and have some commie Xers come up and start yelling at me about it.

Big news here in Seattle, and so far Amazon is saying they are not going to reopen the HQ2 search.  This may mean that Washington DC will be the sole HQ2.

JMO, but to me it wouldn't make sense for them to have a second HQ anywhere West of the Rockies. East to SouthEast makes the most sense.

And right after I post that I find this

You know, it's funny, I've come across posts on my other forum where they're going "Good!!  That'll show Amazon!"

I'm still composing my post "Okay, so this shows Amazon what?  It hurts them how?  They'll just open/expand their other areas more."

yup, an old friend- a small biz owner in NYC was ranting and raving about how awful amazon is.

Okay, then I'll play devil's advocate.

1. Many of the most socialist of the loudmouths got what they wanted, so Amazon's choice isn't going to upset them.  It's a win as far as they're concerned.
2. Do we want big businesses dictating sweetheart deals to compliant state and local governments so those businesses can exclusively enjoy the benefits of tax abatement, long-term decreased tax rates, eminent domain and other crony capitalist nonsense not afforded to smaller companies?

Here in Washington state, we are not supposed to say this very loudly, lest Boeing pack up and move more production to other states.  This is why we have given Boeing billions of dollars in various sweetheart deals.

Like those smaller companies that now won't exist because there aren't 25k upper middle class families to support and/or milk? A rising tide lifts all ships.

Ideally a whole state ought to be business friendly for all. I imagine that with property and income taxes south Carolina would be cheaper to Amazon without subsidy.

I dig the negative side of that. In fact I just heard this morning while the talking heads were talking, that Google apparently made a ginormous investment in Manhattan offices, and did so without the Amazon fanfare of, "Who wants us and who'll give us a deal?" They just went in and built their offices. There was no info given on any tax breaks or deals.

On the other hand, I don't have the knowledge to know where the defining line is between straight up corporate welfare, and corporate incentives that would be beneficial to job creation and revenue.

I have a fairly simplistic criteria but it's fiscally sound. If they are receiving more in subsidies and breaks than they provide in tax revenue and job creation, corporate welfare. If they receive less in subsidies and breaks than they provide in tax revenue and job creation, beneficial incentive.

What gets me is the lack of basic math skills among the "We Won!" crowd. Amazon was getting $3 billion in incentives and tax subsidies in return for bringing in an estimated 25,000 mostly middle-income jobs and an estimated $10 billion in tax revenue. That's a 230% ROI in real dollars that directly benefits the city and its citizens. If NY took that same $3 bil, put it in investments, and got $10 mil in return they would be hailed as heroes.

If TIFF districts are bad for cities, places like amazon could just as easily move to a midwestern site where there is plenty of inexpensive land that wasn't producing much tax revenue to begin with... of course the left ALWAYS wants to extract tribute from anyone or anything that produces a useful service or product.

To point out the hypocrisy- the left always gives monopolistic utility corporations huge incentives for green energy.

DeBlasio further explaining. I mean, this is classic socialism straight out of Atlas Shrugged. Amazon simply went Galt.

Quote
“I have no problem with my fellow progressives critiquing a deal or wanting more from Amazon — I wanted more from Amazon, too,” de Blasio said. “The bottom line is, this was an example of an abuse of corporate power. They had an agreement with the people of New York City.”

He added: “They said they wanted a partnership, but the minute there were criticisms, they walked away. What does that say to working people, that a company would leave them high and dry, simply because some people raised criticism?”

I never understood why Amazon wanted to be in NYC.  NYC is a very crowded, very expensive, and very business-unfriendly place to be.
