Loose Lug Nuts
« on: March 07, 2019, 12:35:16 PM »
Loose lug nuts are not your friend.

I've been getting some popping noises for a while on my truck.  It got really bad this week.  Yea..... Here's why:

When I bought this truck, it had a full size spare tire on it.  The original tire was in the bed, with obvious damage to the sidewall.  Cool, someone replaced the tire.  No need to do anything much about that, since it's a full size spare in good condition.

I suspect that these lug nuts were only put on hand tight, maybe barely better.  Over the past 5000 miles I've had it, it's been moving about, causing damage.

Anyway, I'm a tard for not picking up on this sooner, and now have to work out the extent of the damage and what I'm going to do about it.  The rim is trashed, the lugs are trash, rotor is trashed, and the hub may be trashed too.

Now that is LOOSE!  Probably will have to replace the studs too, not just the ones that broke already.

Yeah, that would explain the popping noises. You're lucky it started out with eight. If you'd only had five to begin with, you'd be in real trouble.

It'll need studs for sure. Relatively easy if you have an air hammer. PITA if you don't.

Also, re-torque the rest of 'em just to be sure.

Think I'm just going to replace the whole hub.  I've got a lot of wear now where the rim rides, and sometimes this truck takes weight right up to the GVWR.  Junkyard, $15, done.

Ab-so-freakin'-lutely:

"Also, re-torque the rest of 'em just to be sure."

I imagine that could have felt and sounded like a CV joint going bad, yes?
