Seattle is dying: a local news special

I stopped working in downtown Seattle in 2004 and went back downtown in 2018.  Back in the early 2000's, you saw homeless people, but the majority of them were floridly mentally ill and there were virtually no encampments.  Now, 14 years later, you see encampments with huge numbers of homeless people and a substantial percentage of them are addicted to opiates.  Piles of feces and discarded syringes litter the streets. I see this every day as I walk from the transit center to my office.

Today's lesson is brought to you by the letter "S" as in Shithole, Seattle and San Francisco. Nothing new in the realm of large west coast cities where it doesn't get cold enough in the winter to drive the homeless south. We are even starting to see an larger homeless population doing many of the same things in our little town of Spokane.

I am a big believer in personal autonomy, and I think forced intervention should be a very last resort.  I believe people have the right to make poor choices that I would not make.  Yet when I see people tortured by mental illness or addiction screaming in the street, and knowing they have a very high rate of death due to exposure, illness, or assault, are we failing them as a society by leaving them be?

I used to know all the answers but it seems I've forgotten some.

There are some people with too little intelligence, who lack sufficient impulse control, or who are too mentally ill to be capable of surviving on their own.  I don't know that anyone has ever come up with a solution I like.

Are they really leaving them be?  Seems to me they are getting all sorts of help in maintaining their homeless "life".  Someone is supplying food and needles.  They are getting drugs somewhere.  The city is allowing them to stay and ignoring the drug use.  Actually leaving them alone completely might be an improvement.  At least it would force a change.

I take great umbrage with that story.

Seattle isn't dying.

Seattle is being MURDERED.

Murdered by liberal antipathy, ludicrous policies, inaction, socialist mantras, and continuation of policies that have a long track record of abject failure.

Spent 4 days at my corporate headquarters and got the chance to explore the city a little bit.

Pretty easy to get around, nice touristy stuff to visit.

Yea, a lot of what used to be called bums along with the smell of urine surprisingly frequently.

It’s a shame, the liberal city policies actually encourage the behavior they claim to be addressing.

I visited Seattle once some years back.  The day we flew in was clear and sunny.  The city was beautiful.  The next 3 days it was foggy, overcast, and drizzling rain off and on.  There was still a lot of do around the downtown water front area.  We did not go around the city too much.

1983 was the last time I was in Seattle. I drank a lot of beer that weekend. Don't remember much about it.  =D :old:

Mayor Fischer looked at Seattle and San Francisco, he even stated he wanted to copy the San Fran model, and decided since it's working so well for them that Louisville needs to be a homeless sanctuary. Homeless everywhere now. His solution to that? More bike lanes that nobody uses. POS needs to go.

And now here comes the sequel:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WijoL3Hy_Bw

My wife and I watched it last night. I thought it was a 90 minute commercial to carry a gun if you live or work in downtown Seattle.  I saw a lot of this stuff as I was walking 0.5 miles from the train station downtown to my office at 0615.  I am so glad I no longer work in downtown Seattle.

I once again say that this is sad, having had some good times traveling to Seattle for work 10-20 years ago.

It's a shame the leftists aren't forced to stay in the city and enjoy the fruit of their ideology.

Instead they are looking at property next door to Ben.

Leftists have an irresistible urge to share their filth with others.

"Three officers came by shortly after the last big break-in and said "Under the policies that we have to work with now, we can't protect your store."
The homeless problem is just a symptom of a lot of other bad policies and bad decisions going on.

Considering that prosecutors and judges in a lot of major cities have been getting even more lenient on criminals in the last year, I think Seattle won't be the only city with problems.  I have heard the Austin, TX homeless problem has been getting worse and worse.  I never go there, just what I hear.

Seattle was nice when I visited several years ago.

In some respects though it reminded me of downtown Chicago back in the 80's.

A lot of sketchy guys wandering around and every ally you passed by stunk like urine.

I haven't spent any time down there in the last ten years or so, despite it only being less than 15 miles away.

In the 90's early 2000's things had really been cleaned up.

Still occasional stinky alleys but the whole place was cleaner, the feeling of dingy decline wasn't there any more.

Believe me, we're on alert. I'm already scared that I now need to move to BFE Wyoming. Boise really, really wants to be Portland Jr, and if enough commie pinko people continue to move there (many, many from Portland), they will succeed. We might be able to hold out as majority conservative for the years I have left on Earth, we may not. Eternal Vigilance.
