*shrug* the smart move would be for the military to play into the joke. Set a designated "break in" point, arrange a Mud Run obstacle course type race, put up funny alien decorations at the end with a party type event. I would think they could figure out crowd control and how to keep people out of actual sensitive or dangerous areas. Give the curiosity seekers and wacko's a distraction so they won't come up with anymore of their own ideas.

Hell, they could even use it to raise money for charity or something, not to mention the recruitment opportunity.

Great idea.

Add in some harmless fake land mines that pop up and make noise or flash.  That would be awesome to watch.  Maybe have some security guys join in wearing alien outfits plus some Men in Black types.

It would be a better meme if they'd wait a month, and do it on St Crispin's Day.

From the first link

"Yes, it sounds like a joke, but there apparently are some people who want to check out the joke," Connie West, the co-owner of Little A'Le'Inn (pronounced "little alien"), told NPR.

West's inn in Alamo, Nev., is the closest lodging site to Area 51. "About 26 miles from the runway," she says.

...

"Apparently, people are taking it seriously," West said. "I think they're stupid if they think they're going to get to the test site, but I'm gonna capitalize on it."

I like the way this woman thinks. Spoken like a true entrepreneur.

...and cable company customer service.
That just illustrates Area 51's weakness- it actually has an address or can be found on a map.

I figure anything of importance was moved to Area 52.

I spent some down time looking at Google Map satellite views of Area 51 (look up Groom Lake, which is just to the north of Area 51 runways).  First, bravo to Google. If you drag the yellow man onto the area, he changes into a flying saucer.  Second, there are some good vantage points around the area.  Think the snipers would mind if we came with binoculars just to watch the show?

There *used to be* some good vantage points. Now, If you can see it, you are on govt property.

I wonder how many people will bring drones . . .

Wouldn't it be funny if they released hundreds or thousands of balloons trailing strands of foil from somewhere upwind of the site?  >:D

OK, that also explains "karen", sort of, which  I was wondering about.

The Military (especially the Army) uses "Carl" as the f-d up troop who has a terminal case of the stupids.

Meanwhile regarding the storming of Area 51, I'll be like:

[popcorn] [popcorn] [popcorn] [popcorn] [popcorn] [popcorn]

Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.

Bring me my Broadsword and a clear understanding.
Get up to the roundhouse on the cliff-top standing.
Take women and children and bed them down.
Bless with a hard heart those that stand with me.
Bless the women and children who firm our hands.
Put our backs to the north wind.
Hold fast by the river.
Sweet memories to drive us on,
for the motherland.
