Quote
“He’s just playing dead,” sighs a bemused horseman, whose point is proved when Jingang stands up immediately after the rejected rider leaves. However, when the cowboy makes like he’s trying to make a second pass at the horse, Jingang topples to the dirt once again.

The horse better be careful where he does that.  Someone might try to beat him.

I think that horse is my spirit animal...

All I can think is this horse isn't fulfilling its job.

Unless they can monetize its antics, he's a useless beast, just taking up space and feed. (I have some familiarity with how much it costs to take care of a horse.)

Once the novelty wears off, I'm pretty sure his owners will "take care of him" one way or another.
I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought

I remember some comedian saying he and his wife always did it doggy style. He begged and she rolled over and played dead.

I just repeated this, and oddly enough, my wife did not think it was funny. Huh.

I can't help but think that the horse has been trained to do that.

It's also a very small horse -- hardly bigger than a pony.

It's not funny, except in the most bitter way.  It's sad.

I agree with Hawk - trained to do that is a likely thing.  I mean, the first time the horse even had his tongue hanging out!

Still, my backup idea is that maybe the horse is actually hurting somehow, and that's the way he keeps weight off the painful spot?

I don't think this is the first horse that has ever learned to do something like this... on its own.

I think people were less willing to put up with it in the past though.

To me it just looked like the horse was playing around.  I note how the horse started to get up and then dropped back down when the guy moved back toward him.  Could be trained.  Could be having people ride him is something the horse doesn't like at all (for one reason or another).
