And here comes the thread veer...

I hate umbrellas.  I'm 6'1", and it seems like everyone in the word carries an umbrella at just the right height so the spokes are right at my eye level.  Been poked in the face more times than I can count.  And, of the umbrellas I've owned and tried, the full sized are a PITA to carry around, and the small ones don't do much more than keep my head and shoulders dry.  I prefer a good raincoat and hat.

That said, I don't think anyone in military uniform should use an umbrella.  Except the Air Force (PJs, Air Commandos, and A-10 pilots excluded).   ;)

You already limited it to people in a military uniform.
I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought

Saw the title and misinterpreted what was meant by "dry."

An umbrella is fine by me in non-active situations. If you are working office or other non-field type positions, I see no reason to disallow them. Flight line, in the field, shipboard, etc., no. Walking between buildings, off duty, that sort of thing, should be a non-issue.
I might not last very long or be very effective but I'll be a real pain in the ass for a minute!

Um, actually ... no.

Is there a story that goes with that?

I thought the Marines (like every other branch of service) had coats and covers and jackets to keep dry. Why would they need (or want) umbrellas? Or if they need something that keeps rain off better, why not authorize campaign hats?

Jamis never had to worry about any of that. He's so short that rain, no matter how hard, gets down to him....

Only military person allowed to carry a brolly is that guy in A Bridge Too Far.

Christ, I've not heard anyone call it a bumbershoot since my Grandmother died in 1980...

She also used to call the sofa a davenport...
