New member of family
« on: January 19, 2020, 01:13:09 PM »
We lost our dog Leo, a Leonberger/Shepard mix, in June.  His death was unexpected and was really tough to take.  Yesterday, we drove up to B.C. and brought home a 9-week old, male Bernese Mountain Dog.  We named him Bennett.  See the attachment for a photo.

Nice dog.

Dogs should have at least two-syllable names.

First syllable alerts them, second syllable confirms it.

So I hope you don't start calling him "Ben."

No worries.  His nickname will be Tony — the basketball coach, not the singer.  My wife and I met at UVA and we’ll be moving back to Charlottesville in a few months.

Yes, after 16+ years in the Seattle area, we’re moving back to Virginia to take care of our elderly mothers and return to our roots.  I’m not changing jobs but will work remotely and travel back to the Seattle area as necessary.  The political and 2A developments in VA sicken me, but it’s still the place for us.

How did I not realize you were in the area?

Since my seizure has restricted my driving I can't come your way, but if can make it up to Skagit county let's have a beer or coffee before you split.

I LOVE Berners...

Personality wise they are very much like Leos.

Where are you going to be in Virginia, Saw?

If you're going to be close enough Seren would love to meet and play with Bennet. She's extremely gentle with pups.

We are going to be in Charlottesville, so not that far away.  I have thought about reaching out to you over the years when I fly through Dulles, but didn't want to be known as a Mike Irwin stalker. :)  Now that you've invited us, we would love to pay you and Seren a visit once we're settled.

FYI, we hope to get a Leonberger as a playmate for Bennett.  While Leo wasn't a purebreed, he had a lot of Leonberger in him and was the best dog we have ever had.  We have had three Berners over the years.  When the last one died from cancer, the pain was so great that we swore we wouldn't get a dog for awhile.  That lasted all of one week, when we adopted Leo from a rescue organization.

"didn't want to be known as a Mike Irwin stalker."

Yeah, you'd have to take a number.

The biggest problem to having two large dogs in my house is that I don't have much room, and barely any yard. There are some dog parks locally though, and Seren gets along with everyone.
