Well, it may not officially be Summer, but it's Summer. Changed to shorts for the first time this year after mowing the lawn this afternoon. The AC just kicked in for the first time this year, and in a couple of days we're supposed to have a few days of record breaking temps approaching 100.

Yay! Mowing the stinkin' lawn, controlling the weeds that are popping up like crazy, mosquitoes and West Nile Virus in the pastures, and oh yeah, hot weather. October and jacket weather cannot come soon enough.

I guess one thing better about being in an area with a mosquito problem is the county sprays pretty aggressively.  Fogger trucks drive around at night.  They have 3 planes that dust the outlying areas.  Most years, it isn't too bad.  I don't want to be here in a bad year.  The salt marsh mosquitoes are bad.

Yeah, they do that here too usually from late June until August. The fogger truck even comes all the way down my driveway and does a circle around my house. Skeeters around the house are not bad, and I bought a propane fogger a couple of weeks ago to try this Summer.

Unfortunately no matter how much they spray and fog, changing irrigation sets in the early morning in the pasture still requires full coverage clothing and tons of bug juice. Usually by early September we get mosquito killing nights.

Sounds like your opinion of yard work is similar to my opinion of yard work. I frakkin hate it.

I'll trade you 2:1 mosquitoes for ticks.

With ticks you usually have to go to them, mosquitoes track you down in swarms. I can't even stand on my front porch without getting attacked.

I can't deal with the heat and bugs like when I was younger and healthier but my most hated season is dumbass season. And if you deal with the public that season is always open.

So true   AR15 Firing

I have hated summer for decades.  Anything over ~70* is enough to make me start looking for the nearest AC.

It's even worse now, having to wear a back brace, knee brace & (company supplied & required) vest while running my ass off 5 days a week.  While approaching 63.  In Texas.

Here in Connecticut I can tolerate the heat better than SWMBO, but I'm certainly not complaining when it's time for the ACs to go in the windows.  It looks like tonight will require one in our bedroom.  As for mosquitos, here on our quarter acre we only have to spray once a year to keep using our yard.

Other than that, summer is my favorite season, and I don't mind CT summers.  I think it's a matter of perspective.  I used to work the hay season summers in Maine and I did Basic/Infantry School at Fort Benning May-September.  I have been truly miserable enough to not mind a hot and humid day as long as it ends with me sitting in air conditioning.

There is that. I feel like a wimp when I think about what people put up with even just 100 years ago.  Though one thing you notice about some of the structures of that time, and even into the 1950's, is that they built to make lack of AC more comfortable. Low and high windows to create a draft that pumped out the hot air, for instance. You don't see much modern construction do that.

Aye, that was pointed out by a tour guide when I visited a plantation house near Charleston.  My house is a 1935 Montgomery Ward kit house; while it does allow for a nice breeze through the downstairs (kitchen, dining room, and living room out to the front porch) I don't know if that was by design or by coincidence.

My boss used to have a canal house with water access to the bay.  He had a mosquito spray system put on his yard.  Little sprayers run along the top of his fence that puffed out stuff every so often.  It did a good job keeping the mosquitoes down.  His neighbor downwind was also happy.

I get very few mosquitos here in the mountain air. Hating the grass mowing but every year it is more and more clover for the bees. Garden is finally getting moving, so all and all a good time of year.  grin

I despise summer. I can always throw on a coat, but taking off clothes only gets one so far.

Yeah, I've never gotten very far by taking off my clothes, either. What are you gonna do?

I am intrigued by your ideas, and would like to read your newsletter in an air-conditioned room, in front of a fan, sipping iced tea.

Yeah, I know.  In addition to Georgia, the military has sent me to Mississippi (Gulfport), South Carolina (Charleston), Virginia (Fort Lee), and Hawaii (JBBHH), all in the summertime.  There is a reason I live in New England.  I'm slated to go to Fort Lee again this August.

I spent most of 4 years at Groton as an instructor at Subschool,  felt more like 40.
0 stars, would not recommend.

Sure, windows you could open top and bottom to let the air out, concern for "cross-ventilation," transoms over doors...  I wonder how many people nowadays know what a transom is.

In my farmhouse, I used to disable the heating part of the furnace in the basement, let the cool air in down there at night and open an intake to the ducting, then during the hot part of the day, turn on the furnace fan to blow cool basement air all over the house.  People would think the place was air conditioned.  Of course, it gets pretty cool at night here in Colorado, might  not work so well in other areas.

We spent a couple of weeks living in tents in Fort Polk, in August, without enough shower facilities for everyone to get a shower every other day.

That was training for us to spend autumn and winter in Bosnian mountain country.  cheesy
