Back in the late 80s when I was a cadet at USMA, the infantry instructors and armor instructors loved to argue about which was more essential on the modern battlefield.  Remember, this was the Cold War, and the Soviets had about a dozen tanks for each one of ours.  Bottom line then, tanks were great against small arms, but vulnerable as hell to anti tank missiles.  Infantry did like tanks on the battlefield.  Even a dead tank was pretty good cover.
