How do you keep track of your SD memory cards and flash drives?
« on: September 22, 2020, 06:49:26 PM »
Especially the SD cards.  I just bought a half dozen new cards because I've misplaced so many of my old ones, and the new cards don't even come with a little plastic case.  (OTOH, they have gotten so cheap the class 10 cards cost less than I used to pay for class 4s, and class 4 are almost disposable)  Do you use some kind of a wallet?  Maybe just dump them loose in a pill bottle?  And in any case, do you label them somehow?

I should go look in my camera case, the lost cards might be in there...  Now where did I put the camera...

I found a case on Amazon years ago that has slots for SD cards and elastic bands for flash drives. Everything is in there. I label the flash drives, but kinda guess on the SD cards. Though most of my SD cards reside in one device or another.

For thumb drives, I have a container  that originally held potato salad from the supermarket deli. It's translucent, so I can see what's in it, and the covers have a recess so they're stackable. That means I can keep thumb drives of different capacities in their own tubs, or separate the full ones from the partially full ones, from the new ones.

I use neodymium magnets and stick them to the side of my computer case.

I always wished they'd make a white Sharpie. (No wisecracks, please.)  I found there are variously colored paint pens (including white) in hobby shops.  Trouble with this is once you open one and use it, they tend to dry out and no amount of shaking the mixing slug within them will return them to usefulness, but a dab of acetone on the tips sometimes helps. I have "flanged up" a half-assed fine brush from a sharpened 3/16" dowel with the tip slightly crushed and used typewriter white out, too.

For the most part I just write a letter or number on them and refer them to an external index of contents.  Just don't lose the SDD or thumber with the index on it. :)

They make a silver sharpie.  Works well on dark backgrounds, including black plastic.

I 3d printed a couple of SD card holders I keep near the computers. If I need to write on the card, silver sharpie is the way to go.

I didn't think magnets affected SDD cards unless the field was very very strong or the flux changed very rapidly.

Check me on that one.

Nevertheless, that Hillary wisecrack was excellent.

I guess I don't have that many.  I just keep in a certain area of my desk.  Something to keep in mind though.

Quart ziplock bag next to the computer. No real organization. Camera and phone have big enough cards I don't need to change them.

I'm thinking a peanut butter jar next to the computer. :)

Pill bottle or in USB adapters on lanyards hung on the inside closet door knob.
