Some hope
« on: November 20, 2020, 10:09:28 AM »
I'm already seeing what I hope to be the Dems' Achille's Heel, namely The Squad and several of their more "Progressive" members already trying to out-Socialism each other, mostly from their perception that America will tolerate the stupidity in actual legislative terms. My hope is they either become so mired in infighting, or get so hyper-focused on things which America In General, even Liberal America, will soundly reject, that they become functionally useless in the legislative sense.  Maybe they will regularly introduce bills so egregious that SCOTUS is finally forced to render decisions which cement a more Conservative legal framework for future legislation (concentrations on First, Second, and Fourth Amendments).

Another thing I'm seeing is the more Centrist-oriented Dems eyeballing historic precedents of midterm elections going to the opposing party. Therein lies their concern for losing cushy positions of perceived power, and also of ending up with veto-proof majorities in both houses ... though History also indicates Repubs will likely squander any such opportunity. That tends to moderate tones somewhat, especially for Lib-leaning reps from flyover states and districts not firmly ensconced Lib-majority regions.

Still, we'll be dealing with plenty of stupid for at least the next two years. I just hope cooler heads prevail and Libs don't push things to the breaking point, either socially or economically.

My guess, based on the results of the House election in which Republican candidates used the specter of encroaching socialism to win a number of dependable blue seats Biden is going to try to move the overall party back to a more fiscally centrist position...

And the squad is going to go full bore left leaning nuts and will engage in antics that will make their actions in 2018-2019 look like child's play compared to the civil war they're going to ignite.

You though they stirred the pot by endorsing leftist challengers to entrenched incumbent Dems?

As AOC would probably say... Hold my martini shaker and watch this...

To your point, Biden has picked his Treasury Secretary. He is keeping the name "secret" for now, but assuring everyone it's a name that "will make all Democrats happy" (no mention of non-dems and unity).

When he announces it,  I think we'll have a good idea on initial influence of the squad in a Biden admin.

According to MSN, these are the suspected front runners for Treasury Secretary...

Federal Reserve Board Governor Lael Brainard, former vice chairman of the US Federal Reserve Roger Ferguson, and former chair of the Federal Reserve Janet Yellen are reportedly front-runners for Treasury Secretary position.

I don't know a lot about any of them, but I'm pretty sure that they're all fairly centrist on monetary policy, so I doubt very much that the squad would find much to love there.

That sounds like Elizabeth Warren (who I heard really wanted the job) will not do any celebratory whooping and dancing.

Warren announced that she thinks she would be more valuable to the party by keeping her wigwam in the Senate.

IIRC, MA currently has a republican governor, so they'd have to pass the law again to strip him of his ability to repoint a replacement.

As long as she can have only one Email account, we already know she can't handle two.

I may have been the first one to post here about SECDEF Hillary. It appears that might be off the table or was only a frightening rumor (but it's 2020, so you never know). Last I read it was UN Ambassador, which Susan Rice said was an insult to Hillary.

I wouldn't be surprised if she gets a position of power though. This is something I hate about all administrations. While they may do some due diligence on experienced people for important jobs, they still always take care of their friends.

"Hey, Joe gave me $500K for my campaign and I heard he owns one of those assault guns so he knows about war. Let's make him SECDEF!"

I'd say it's an insult to the UN, which I didn't think was even possible.

Oh, heck -- Make her ambassador to Outer Slobbovia (or whatever that mud-filled country is in Dilbert) and ship her there in perpetuity.

Elbonia. IIRC, Slobbovia was a foreign country Al Capp used in his Li'L Abner comics.

I could get on board with that. (Unless there's an opening in Berzerkistan.)

And its sister country, Macaronia?
