Need some books for a roadtrip
« on: March 06, 2005, 07:04:20 PM »
Hitting the road Saturday morning and I need some books to keep me occupied. I've read just about every Stephen King and Terry Pratchett book as well as the Earl Swagger books (I'd read the Bob Lee books but I can't get ahold of the first in the series) and some Heinlein. I'm interested in fiction (especially books with good gun scenes or pro-gun messages of course) and non-fiction cop or military books.

For a great read on the road, try Jim Butcher's series about the wizard Harry Dresden.  Really well written, taut and entertaining.  In order, they are:

Storm Front
Fool Moon
Grave Peril
Summer Knight
Death Masks
Blood Rites

See http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-handle-url/index=books&field-author=Jim%20Butcher/102-5727312-4049733 for details.  Very highly recommended.

"Freehold" by Micheal Z. Williamson. Similar style to Heinlein IMHO. he's Madmike on THR. Very pro gun funnily enough, knows his stuff and very polite.

James Clavell - Shogun, King Rat, Noble House, Tai Pan.  Proper yarns, big enough to last a day or two each and just plain old fashioned good storytelling.

Frank Herberts Dune series. Buy them all in one go and work your way through them one by one. Epic way of wasting a week or two.

Raymond E. Feist

Some of Wilbur Smiths books.

2Hr. Airport books - jack Higgins, ken Follett, Sven Hassel, M. Z. Williamsons Sniper books.

Another consideration is to get books on tape/CD from the library.  That's what my wife and I do.  Makes the time just fly by.

Cryptonomicon by Neil Stephson.  Good read, fairly pro-gun.  Includes a batch of very intelligent people who go around fully, publiclly armed to point out the illogic of most gun control laws.

I'd recommend Conquistador by S.M. Stirling, all of David Weber's Honor Harrington novels, and the Prince Roger series by David Weber and John Ringo.
I'll second the recommendation for Freehold and Cryptonomicon, as well.

Not exactly military, but I just started reading the Lewis & Clark expedition chronicles. Fascinating reading except for it makes me feel like a wuss when I read about the hardships these guys endured as everyday occurrences.

I would recommend the Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind.  They have some good messages in them, good battle scenes (if they are with magic and swords) and are a pretty quick read.  I also like Stephen King (specifically the Dark Tower series) so I think you would like these books.  The first book is called Wizard's First Rule.

Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturing series.

"Master and Commander"
"Post Captain"
"HMS Surprise"
"The Mauritius Command"
"Desolation Island"
"The Fortune of War"
"The Surgeon's Mate"
"The Ionian Mission"
"Treason's Harbour"

there are more, (20 in all, plus an unfinished '21') but that should hold you

These are books I've bought, so I can read them again.  I've read all 20 four times now, and am on my fifth trip through.  They're quite good  Cheesy

Enemies Foreign and Domestic, by Matthew Bracken.  AKA Travis Mcgee from THR.

Alex Rutledge mysteries by Tim Corcoran.  Set in wacky Key West.  Great reads.  Bone Island Mambo, Gumbo Limbo, The Mango Opera and Octopus Alibi.

A big +1 on that.  David Weber's Honor Harrington series is one of my all time favorites.  It's exceptionally well written, good characters, interesting story.  Plus, the main characters favorite weapon, in a time of space ships and high tech weapons, is a 1911 .45ACP.  What's not to like?

Tom Clancy's early books are also quite good.  I recommend "A Hunt For Red October", "Patriot Games", and "Clear and Present Danger" with out reservation.  His newest books are getting pretty bad.

Non-fiction, Carl Sandburg's biography of Lincoln ("Lincoln: The Prarie Years and the War Years") and Marshal de Bruhl's biography of Sam Houston ("Sword of San Jacinto").

Here's a second on Jim Butcher.  I've read the entire Dresden series and thoroughly enjoyed each of the books.

I can tell you what I'm taking on the road: General Of The Army: George C. Marshall, Soldier And Statesman. At 800+ pages, it should keep me occupied for a while.

That, and my Bible.
